Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Queen

A muffled shot echoed. Santiago screamed as his kneecap shattered, his legs giving out beneath him. As he collapsed toward the floor, I lunged forward with lightning speed, catching baby Leo safely in my arms and pulling him tight against my chest.
Santiago writhed on the floor, groaning in agony, holding his bleeding leg. Tactical officers flooded the nursery window and doorway within seconds, pinning Santiago to the ground and disarming him instantly.
Alexander stepped over the groaning man, inspecting Leo and me. "Is the baby hurt?"
"He's perfect," I said, kissing Leo’s forehead as his cries subsided into gentle snuffles against my shoulder.
I stood over Santiago as the police dragged him away for the final time. This time, there would be no bail, no corrupt judges, and no escape. He was going to a maximum-security facility for federal treason, kidnapping, and murder charges connected to the reopened Maya Lin investigation.
"You're a monster..." Santiago sobbed, bleeding into the carpet.
