CHAPTER 2 — "Dad... Is That Really You?"

The mansion became unnaturally quiet.
Even the grandfather clock seemed to stop ticking.
Charlotte remained on her knees, her hands stained with wine and cleaning chemicals.
Vanessa's smile completely vanished.
"No one move," she whispered sharply to the servants.
"Get that girl out of sight."
Two maids hurried toward Charlotte.
Before they could grab her...
The enormous oak doors slowly opened.
Richard Kingsley walked inside.
Tall.
Imposing.
Still wearing his navy business suit after sixteen straight hours aboard his private jet.
Behind him followed attorneys.
Security guards.
Senior executives.
He had returned unexpectedly after a major acquisition in Europe closed days ahead of schedule.
Richard smiled faintly.
"I wanted to surprise my family."
No one answered.
Instead...
He noticed something strange.
His daughter wasn't waiting to greet him.
She always had.
Even as a little girl, Charlotte would sprint across the foyer shouting,
"Daddy!"
Today...
Nothing.
Only silence.
His eyes wandered across the room.
Expensive guests.
Half-empty wine glasses.
Servants standing rigidly.
Then...
He saw a girl kneeling on the marble floor.
Her uniform was faded.
Her knees were bruised.
Her hands were red from harsh cleaning chemicals.
For a moment...
He didn't recognize her.
She looked too thin.
Too exhausted.
Too broken.
Then she slowly lifted her face.
"Dad..."
The tiny whisper echoed through the mansion.
Richard's briefcase slipped from his hand.
It crashed onto the marble.
Impossible.
"Charlotte?"
His voice cracked.
His daughter gave a tiny nod.
Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks.
"It's me."
Richard stared in horror.
His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.
This wasn't possible.
His daughter had always told him through Vanessa's messages that she was "happy at boarding school."
Vanessa had shown him smiling photos.
Report cards.
Birthday pictures.
Even videos.
Every single one had been fake.
Richard took one slow step toward Charlotte.
"What happened to you?"
Charlotte opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
She had imagined this moment a thousand times.
Now that it had arrived...
She couldn't speak.
Vanessa rushed forward, forcing a nervous laugh.
"Richard, sweetheart..."
"You've misunderstood everything."
"Charlotte insisted on helping the staff today."
"She's been learning humility."
Richard didn't even look at her.
His eyes remained locked on Charlotte's scarred hands.
Bruises.
Burn marks.
Small cuts.
Old injuries.
Not days old.
Months.
Maybe years.
His voice dropped into a terrifying calm.
"Who did this?"
Charlotte instinctively looked toward Vanessa.
She didn't have to say a single word.
Richard understood.
The room suddenly felt ten degrees colder.
Vanessa forced another smile.
"Richard..."
"Please..."
"You know teenagers exaggerate—"
SLAP!
The sound echoed through the entire mansion.
Vanessa stumbled backward in complete shock.
It wasn't rage.
It wasn't revenge.
It was the first time in twenty years Richard Kingsley had ever struck another human being.
"You touched my daughter."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"And I wasn't here to protect her."
Security guards instinctively stepped closer.
Guests quietly backed away.
Several secretly started recording.
Vanessa realized everything was collapsing.
Desperate, she screamed,
"Fine!"
"I'll tell you everything!"
"But if she tells you the truth..."
"You'll lose your daughter forever."
Richard froze.
Charlotte's face turned white.
Vanessa smiled through swollen lips.
"There is one secret your late wife never had the courage to tell you."
She slowly reached into her designer handbag...
...and pulled out a sealed envelope with Richard's name written across the front.

An envelope that had remained hidden...
for eighteen long years.
