CHAPTER 3 — "The Letter That Changed Everything"

The envelope trembled in Vanessa's hand.
Every person in the mansion stared at it.
Richard didn't blink.
"Give it to me."
Vanessa smiled through her swollen lip.
"I warned you... once you read this, nothing will ever be the same."
She slowly handed him the yellowed envelope.
His name...
written in his late wife's unmistakable handwriting.
Richard's fingers shook.
He hadn't seen Emily's handwriting since the day she died.
The date in the corner made his heart stop.
It had been written only three days before her funeral.
He tore it open.
Inside was a folded letter.
His eyes scanned the first sentence.
Then...
his face turned completely white.
"No..."
he whispered.
"This can't be true."
Charlotte felt the room spinning.
"What is it, Dad?"
Richard couldn't answer.
His hands were trembling so violently that the paper slipped onto the marble floor.
Vanessa picked it up before anyone else could.
She read the first lines aloud.
"If you're reading this, Richard, it means I may already be gone. There is something I tried to tell you many times but never found the courage..."
The guests leaned closer.
Vanessa smiled.
"Your wife admitted she had been hiding a terrible secret."
Charlotte's chest tightened.
"No..."
Vanessa looked directly into Richard's eyes.
"She wrote that Charlotte wasn't your biological daughter."
Gasps filled the room.
Someone dropped a wine glass.
Another guest whispered,
"I knew something was strange."
Charlotte felt every ounce of strength leave her body.
"No..."
she cried.
"Mom would never write that."
Richard stood frozen.
The words echoed inside his head.
Not your daughter...
Not your daughter...
Vanessa stepped closer.
"I only protected you."
"I couldn't let another man's child inherit your empire."
Silence.
Pain.
Disbelief.
Charlotte slowly backed away.
Her own father...
would he believe it?
Tears streamed down her face.
"I've loved you my whole life."
"If I'm not your daughter..."
"Why did Mom never tell me?"
Richard couldn't move.
He stared at the letter again.
Then...
his eyes narrowed.
Something wasn't right.
Very slowly...
he noticed a detail everyone else had missed.
Emily had always signed her name with a tiny heart beside the letter "E."
This letter...
didn't have it.
His breathing changed.
He looked closer.
The handwriting looked almost perfect.
Almost.
But not perfect.
Richard suddenly remembered something.
Years ago...
Emily had broken two fingers in a skiing accident.
After that injury...
she never wrote the letter "R" the same way again.
This letter used her old handwriting.
Someone...
had copied writing from years before.
Richard's eyes filled with cold fury.
He folded the paper carefully.
Then looked directly at Vanessa.
"You forged it."
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"I... I don't know what you're talking about."
Richard spoke only four words.
"Call the handwriting experts."
The room exploded into chaos.
Vanessa's confident mask cracked for the first time.
But she wasn't finished yet.
She laughed.
"You still don't understand."
"The letter isn't my real weapon."
Then she pulled out her phone...
pressed one button...
and smiled.
"By now..."
"Your company belongs to me."
May you like
Richard's face changed instantly.
"What did you just do?"
