CHAPTER 4 — "The Billion-Dollar Betrayal"

Richard grabbed his own phone.
Thirty-seven missed calls.
His chief financial officer.
His legal department.
His board chairman.
His private banker.
A terrible feeling settled in his stomach.
He answered the newest call.
The CFO was almost shouting.
"Sir!"
"Someone has just transferred controlling shares of Kingsley Global into an offshore trust!"
Richard's blood ran cold.
"Impossible."
"The authorization used your biometric approval."
"I never approved anything."
"That's the problem, sir."
"The system says you did."
Richard slowly lowered the phone.
Vanessa was smiling again.
"For two years while you traveled the world..."
"I learned every password."
"Every security question."
"Every habit."
"I even copied your fingerprints from your whiskey glass."
The executives behind Richard stared in disbelief.
One attorney whispered,
"My God..."
Richard clenched his fists.
"You've committed fraud."
Vanessa laughed.
"Prove it."
"The shares are already gone."
"And by tomorrow morning..."
"Your empire will legally belong to me."
Charlotte couldn't believe what she was hearing.
This had never been about making her suffer.
It had all been preparation.
Every lie.
Every forged signature.
Every fake school report.
Every blocked phone call.
Everything had been part of a billion-dollar plan.
Vanessa looked at Charlotte with cruel satisfaction.
"You were never the target."
"Your father was."
She turned back toward Richard.
"I broke the only person you loved..."
"Because broken people make terrible businessmen."
The room remained silent.
Then...
Richard did something no one expected.
He smiled.
A calm...
almost amused smile.
Vanessa frowned.
"Why are you smiling?"
Richard slowly reached into the inside pocket of his suit.
He removed a thin black envelope.
"I've spent forty years building an empire."
"You really thought I left everything unprotected?"
Vanessa's confidence began to crumble.
Richard handed the envelope to his lead attorney.
"Open it."
Inside...
was a notarized emergency succession agreement.
Every executive gasped.
The attorney looked up in shock.
"Sir..."
"This document transferred all voting control of Kingsley Global..."
"...to Miss Charlotte Kingsley..."
"...six months ago."
The mansion went completely silent.
Charlotte stared at her father.
"What?"
Richard smiled sadly.
"I knew someone inside this house was trying to steal everything."
"So I secretly made you the majority owner."
Vanessa's face turned ghost white.
"No..."
"That's impossible!"
Richard looked directly into her eyes.
"You've spent two years trying to steal a company..."
"...that stopped belonging to me months ago."
Several guests couldn't hide their laughter.
Vanessa suddenly screamed and lunged toward Charlotte.
"If I lose everything..."
"You'll lose everything too!"
Before anyone could react...
she pulled a small silver remote from her handbag.
She pressed the red button.
Deep beneath the mansion...
a deafening explosion shook the entire estate.
The lights went out.
The marble floor cracked beneath everyone's feet.

And somewhere below them...
the mansion's hidden underground vault had just been breached.
