CHAPTER 6 — "The Secret Beneath the Mansion"

Smoke still drifted through the shattered hallway as firefighters secured the estate.

Broken glass covered the marble floor.

The guests who had mocked Charlotte only an hour earlier now stood outside in silence, wrapped in emergency blankets.

Richard refused medical treatment.

"There are people still inside."

Charlotte grabbed his arm.

"Dad, it's too dangerous."

He looked into her eyes.

"I built this mansion."

"I know every inch of it."

Then his face suddenly changed.

"The vault..."

Charlotte frowned.

"What about it?"

Richard's expression darkened.

"There wasn't just money inside."

A team of firefighters forced open the twisted steel door leading to the underground level.

The explosion had destroyed part of the tunnel.

Concrete hung from the ceiling.

Water pipes had burst.

Electric wires sparked overhead.

As rescue workers searched the debris, one of them shouted,

"Sir!"

"We found another room."

Richard hurried toward the opening.

Behind a collapsed wall was a hidden chamber that had never appeared on the official blueprints.

Inside...

rows of steel filing cabinets lined the walls.

Dust covered everything.

Charlotte slowly stepped inside.

"What is this place?"

Richard answered quietly.

"This was your mother's archive."

Emily Kingsley had documented everything.

Every business contract.

Every family photograph.

Every diary.

Every personal letter.

She had hidden them here years before she died.

Charlotte carefully opened the nearest cabinet.

Inside were dozens of journals tied together with a faded blue ribbon.

The first page read:

"If anything happens to me, Charlotte deserves the truth."

Her hands trembled.

She turned the page.

Every entry described Vanessa.

The manipulation.

The lies.

The financial theft.

The emotional abuse.

Even worse...

Emily had written that she feared someone was trying to poison her.

Charlotte's breathing became uneven.

"Dad..."

Richard slowly read another page.

His face lost all color.

"This wasn't cancer."

Charlotte froze.

"What?"

Richard's voice cracked.

"Your mother believed someone was killing her."

Silence filled the underground chamber.

At that exact moment...

A detective rushed downstairs holding a transparent evidence bag.

"Mr. Kingsley..."

"We found this hidden under Vanessa's bedroom floor."

Inside the bag...

was a small amber medicine bottle with Emily Kingsley's name still printed on the faded label.

The detective swallowed hard.

"Our forensic team says the capsules inside..."

"...aren't medicine."

May you like

"They're poison."

Every person in the room stopped breathing.
