CHAPTER 9 — "The Rooftop Confession"

The helicopter blades thundered above the Kingsley Tower.

Rain lashed across the rooftop.

Richard stepped through the steel door first.

Charlotte ignored his order to stay behind.

"I'm not losing you again."

She followed him into the storm.

Standing near the edge of the roof was an elderly man in a tailored black coat.

Edward Kingsley.

Richard's older brother.

The man who had vanished from public life fifteen years earlier.

He smiled as though they were meeting for dinner.

"You finally figured it out."

Richard's voice was ice.

"You murdered Emily."

Edward sighed.

"I never hated Emily."

"I hated what she represented."

Richard frowned.

"My family?"

Edward laughed.

"No."

"Your future."

He slowly removed a worn leather notebook from inside his coat.

"Father promised me the company."

"Then he changed his will after you married Emily."

"She convinced him that you had integrity."

"You stole the empire that should have been mine."

Charlotte stepped forward.

"So you destroyed our family?"

Edward didn't deny it.

"I invested eighteen years in this plan."

"I recruited Vanessa."

"I paid doctors."

"I bribed lawyers."

"I forged documents."

"I even convinced your father that his own daughter no longer loved him."

Richard's fists trembled.

"You poisoned my wife."

Edward's smile disappeared.

"I merely gave her something that looked like illness."

"When she discovered the truth..."

"...she became a liability."

Charlotte could barely breathe.

"You murdered my mother."

Edward looked at her without emotion.

"I erased an obstacle."

Before anyone could move, Edward held up a small remote control.

"The final copy of Emily's recording is stored inside this device."

"If I press this button..."

"Everything disappears forever."

Police officers quietly surrounded the rooftop from every direction.

Edward noticed them and laughed.

"You still think you've won."

Suddenly...

Vanessa emerged from the helicopter.

Her clothes were torn.

Her face bruised.

She was handcuffed.

"I told them everything!" she cried.

"Edward lied to me!"

"He said no one would get hurt!"

Edward glared at her.

"You always were the weakest link."

Without warning...

he shoved Vanessa toward the roof's edge.

She screamed.

Charlotte instinctively lunged forward and caught her wrist.

Richard grabbed Charlotte before she could be pulled over.

For one terrifying moment...

all three hung between life and death.

Edward slowly backed away.

He smiled one last time.

"You inherited your mother's heart."

"That's why you'll never survive this world."

Then he stepped backward...

and disappeared over the edge.

The rooftop fell silent.

No scream.

No impact.

Only the sound of rain.

A pilot shouted from the helicopter.

"He's gone!"

But when officers reached the edge...

May you like

there was no body below.

Edward Kingsley had vanished.
