Chapter 2 - THE LIVESTREAM ENTRAPMENT

"Look at her face, guys! The 'Quiet Luxury' thief is trapped!"Chloe Bennett felt her phone getting warm in her hand. The views on her livestream were climbing exponentially—20k, 50k, now 80k concurrent viewers. This wasn't just a regular Tuesday broadcast; this was the viral jackpot.

Just five minutes earlier, Chloe had been browsing the high-jewelry section when she noticed the store manager, Monsieur Pierre, stepping away to the back vault to retrieve a piece for a VIP client. The display case for the Étoile de Minuit—a flawless 12-carat diamond necklace worth $1.4 million—had been left momentarily unlocked.

Chloe had seen the opportunity. Not to steal it for herself, but to create a scandal that would solidify her name in internet history.

With practiced agility, Chloe had leaned against the glass, slipped her hand inside, and palmed the heavy diamond piece. As she walked past Elena Whitmore—the quiet, elegantly dressed woman who had ignored Chloe’s earlier attempts at striking up a conversation—Chloe subtly dropped the necklace directly into the open side pocket of Elena's bespoke cashmere coat.

"Oh my god, guys," Chloe whispered frantically into her phone camera, flipping the lens to show Elena. "I think... I think I just saw something insane. We are live at Maison Laurent on Fifth Avenue, and you won't believe what this woman just did."

Elena turned slightly, her brow furrowing as she noticed the phone pointed directly at her face. "Excuse me," Elena said, her voice calm but firm. "Could you please point that camera away from me? I value my privacy."

"Privacy? Or a cover-up?!" Chloe yelled, her voice piercing the silent elegance of the boutique. "Everyone needs to see this thief! You guys, she just stole the Étoile de Minuit necklace! I saw her put it right into her coat pocket!"

The store's security guards, suddenly alerted by the screaming, rushed toward them. Monsieur Pierre emerged from the back room, his face turning pale as he saw the empty display case.

"What is the meaning of this?" Pierre demanded, his voice trembling.

"She took it!" Chloe cried out to her audience, thrusting the phone inches from Elena's face. The chat was moving so fast it was a blur of emojis and outrage. 'Catch her!' 'Rich people think they can get away with anything!' 'Expose her, Chloe!'

Elena didn't flinch. She looked down at her coat pocket, spotted the glittering diamonds peeking out, and realized exactly what was happening. A cold, sharp smile touched her lips.

"You think you've won a prize here, don't you?" Elena asked quietly.

"I just won the internet, sweetie," Chloe hissed under her breath, before turning back to her screen. "Look at her face, guys! She knows she’s caught red-handed! Security, check her pocket!"

The head guard stepped forward, his expression grim. "Ma'am, please don't move. Keep your hands where we can see them."

Chloe smirked, anticipating the glorious, tearful breakdown that would garner her millions of views. But Elena simply raised her hands slowly, her eyes locked onto Chloe with a terrifying level of detachment.

"Go ahead," Elena said to the guard. "Search me. But remember this moment very carefully, Miss Bennett. Because you forgot one crucial thing."
