Chapter 3 - THE POLICE AND THE PUBLIC VERDICT

"She didn't shed a single tear... and that's when I realized we made a terrible mistake."The heavy silver links of the Étoile de Minuit pulled out of Elena's pocket sent a shockwave through the room. The livestream chat erupted into absolute chaos.

'OH MY GOD SHE ACTUALLY DID IT!' 'Cancel her!' 'What's her name? Find her LinkedIn!'

"I knew it!" Chloe shrieked into her microphone, basking in the euphoria of absolute validation. "An old-money aesthetic but a no-money reality! This is what's wrong with society today, guys! The elite think they're above the law!"

Within fifteen minutes, the NYPD arrived. Two officers walked into the pristine environment of Maison Laurent, their heavy boots clacking against the marble. Monsieur Pierre was sweating profusely, holding the recovered necklace in a velvet tray.

"Officer, this woman was caught on my livestream hiding the million-dollar necklace in her coat," Chloe boasted, stepping forward to present her phone as evidence. "My viewers saw the whole thing. I am a public journalist at this point. I want full credit for stopping a major felony."

The officer turned to Elena. "Ma'am, you have the right to remain silent. Do you have anything to say before we take you in for questioning?"

Elena looked at the handcuffs in the officer's hand. For the first time, a flicker of something human passed over her face—not fear, but a deep, resonant disgust.

"I have two things to say," Elena replied, her voice cutting through the ambient noise like a diamond through glass. "First, I am Elena Whitmore. If you put those cuffs on me without checking the store’s security log, your department will be facing a civil suit that will clear out your precinct's budget for the next decade."

The older officer paused. The name Whitmore carried weight in New York, heavy weight.

"And second," Elena continued, looking directly into Chloe’s camera lens, "Miss Bennett here claims her camera saw everything. But she seems to forget that Maison Laurent is a high-security facility. Look up, Chloe."

Chloe scoffed, tossing her hair. "Yeah, there are security cameras. They'll just prove you're a thief!"

"Not the store's cameras," Elena murmured.

Before Chloe could process the statement, Elena’s phone rang inside her purse. She didn't reach for it, but a man in a sharp grey three-piece suit suddenly burst through the front doors of the boutique. He wasn't a cop. He was accompanied by two men carrying briefcases.

"Mistress Whitmore," the man in the suit said, completely ignoring the police officers. "The feed has been downloaded, secured, and sent to the district attorney's personal email. The secure server has locked the copy."

Chloe’s heart stuttered. What feed?

Elena looked at Chloe, her eyes devoid of any warmth. "You see, Chloe, when you manage billions of dollars, people want to kidnap you, blackmail you, or ruin you. My company doesn't let me walk into public spaces unprotected. I don't carry cameras for clout. I carry them for survival."
