Chapter 5 - THE SYSTEMATIC RUIN

"I don't get mad. I just reallocate your assets to zero."The aftermath of the livestream was an internet apocalypse. Within twenty-four hours, the clip of Chloe framing Elena and subsequently getting arrested had accumulated over 150 million views across multiple platforms. Chloe’s follower count plummeted from two million to zero as her accounts were banned for violating terms of service regarding illegal activities and targeted harassment.

But Elena Whitmore wasn't done.

Three weeks later, Chloe was out on a hefty bail, paid for by the remaining savings of her elderly parents who had remortgaged their home to save her from Rikers Island. She sat in a sterile deposition room, her face pale, devoid of makeup, and wearing a cheap target sweatshirt.

Across the table sat Elena, looking radiant in a cream-colored silk blouse, accompanied by Arthur Vance.

"Please, Mrs. Whitmore," Chloe sobbed, her voice cracking. "I lost everything. My sponsors dropped me. Chanel, Revolve, Vogue—they all sent termination letters. I have a criminal trial next month. I’m facing five to ten years. Isn't this enough? You ruined my life!"

Elena set her teacup down with a soft clink.

"I didn't ruin your life, Chloe. You did," Elena said, her voice devoid of malice, which made it infinitely scarier. "You used my face, my reputation, and my peace of mind as fuel for your digital bonfire. You wanted clout. Now you have it. You are the most famous cautionary tale on the planet."

"I'm sorry! I'll make an apology video! I'll do anything!"

Arthur Vance slid a stack of legal documents across the table. "This is a civil judgment demand for $25 million for defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and commercial damage to Whitmore Global Investments. Since your current net worth is approximately negative sixty thousand dollars, we are initiating a full asset seizure."

"What assets?" Chloe gasped. "I don't own anything! The clothes were borrowed! The car was a lease!"

"We know," Elena said softly. "But your parents own a house in Ohio. And you have a trust fund from your grandmother worth eighty thousand dollars. We've already placed a lien on both."

Chloe felt her heart stop. "My parents? They have nothing to do with this! Leave them out of it!"

"Did you think about my father?" Elena asked, her eyes narrowing slightly. "That afternoon, I was buying him a birthday gift. Instead, he spent his seventy-fifth birthday watching his daughter get called a thief by millions of strangers on the internet because a twenty-six-year-old child wanted a viral moment."

Elena leaned forward, her presence completely overwhelming the small room. "I am going to take every single dollar you earn for the rest of your natural life, Chloe. Every paycheck from whatever low-wage job you manage to get after prison will be garnished. You wanted to be watched? I will be watching your bank account forever."
