CHAPTER 1 — THE MAN WHO REFUSED TO STAND

The first time Vanessa called me useless, the ballroom laughed.

The second time...

I made sure every camera in the mansion was recording.

For six weeks after the accident, I never stood.

Doctors arrived every morning.

Physical therapists came and left shaking their heads.

Visitors whispered outside my bedroom.

The newspapers called me "the tragic heir."

Exactly as I wanted.

Because people only reveal their true faces when they think you've become powerless.

And Vanessa...

She changed almost overnight.

She stopped kissing my forehead.

Stopped holding my hand.

Stopped calling me "my future husband."

Instead she called me "my responsibility."

Whenever investors visited, she pushed my wheelchair with a fake smile.

The moment they left, she would lean close enough so only I could hear.

"You've ruined my life."

One evening she wheeled me into my father's library.

"I've spoken to your lawyers."

I looked at her quietly.

"They agree it's better if I begin handling company decisions."

"My recovery may take time."

She smiled.

"Exactly."

Then she placed a thick folder on my lap.

Power of Attorney.

Prepared.

Ready for my signature.

Everything...

My companies.

My voting rights.

My private accounts.

Even the authority to sell family property.

"You trust me, don't you?" she asked sweetly.

I looked at the papers for nearly a minute.

Then slowly...

I picked up the pen.

Her breathing became excited.

She thought she'd won.

Instead I signed only one line.

"Received."

Nothing else.

Her smile froze.

"You forgot the signature."

"I didn't."

Her eyes narrowed.

For the first time...

I saw hatred replace disappointment.

That night my security chief, Marcus, entered through the private elevator.

He dropped a folder onto my desk.

"Your fiancée met someone."

Pictures covered the table.

Vanessa.

Daniel.

My best friend since childhood.

Holding hands.

Kissing.

Leaving luxury hotels together.

My chest tightened...

Not because she betrayed me.

Because Daniel had helped pull me from the wrecked car after the crash.

He'd looked me in the eyes and cried.

"I thought I'd lost you."

Now I understood.

He wasn't crying because I nearly died.

He was crying because...

I survived.

Marcus slid over another photograph.

A meeting.

Vanessa.

Daniel.

My cousin Martin.

And someone I never expected.

The mechanic who had serviced my sports car the morning before the accident.

Marcus spoke quietly.

"The brake failure wasn't an accident."

Silence filled the room.

Then he added one sentence that changed everything.

May you like

"They didn't want you disabled."

"They wanted you dead."
