CHAPTER 7 — THE SECRET INSIDE MY FATHER'S SAFE

That evening, after court, Attorney Lewis asked me to return to my father's old estate.

"There is something he wanted you to receive only after justice began."

We entered the private study.

Lewis unlocked an antique wall safe hidden behind a painting.

Inside sat a single leather journal.

My father's handwriting covered every page.

I opened it carefully.

The first sentence made my hands tremble.

"If you're reading this, then the people I warned you about have finally revealed themselves."

Page after page described his suspicions.

Vanessa had approached me far too conveniently.

Daniel had quietly borrowed money from dangerous investors.

Martin had been stealing from the company for years.

Father hadn't had enough proof.

So he waited.

Near the end of the journal was a sealed envelope addressed to Clara.

She opened it slowly.

Inside was a faded photograph.

A little boy and a little girl stood together in the snow.

The little girl was Clara.

The boy...

Was me.

Neither of us remembered.

Lewis smiled sadly.

"You met once when you were children."

The photograph had been taken at a charity event nearly twenty-five years earlier.

On the back, my father had written:

"If fate is kind, you'll find each other again."

Clara quietly wiped away a tear.

"It seems he was right."

I reached for her hand.

May you like

For the first time in years...

The future no longer frightened me.
