CHAPTER 5 — HE STOOD UP

Six months later...
Vanessa organized one last desperate move.
She invited every investor.
Every journalist.
Every television network.
She intended to announce that she was leaving her disabled fiancé forever.
She wanted sympathy.
She wanted headlines.
She wanted control.
The ballroom was packed.
She stepped onto the stage dramatically.
"I have sacrificed everything for a man who can never stand again."
Tears.
Perfectly rehearsed.
"I deserve freedom."
Thunderous applause.
She turned toward me.
Still sitting quietly in the wheelchair.
"Do you have anything to say?"
I looked at Clara.
She smiled.
Just once.
That was enough.
I removed the blanket.
Placed both feet firmly on the floor.
And stood.
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Vanessa dropped the microphone.
Daniel staggered backward.
Several guests actually screamed.
I walked across the ballroom slowly.
Every step echoed like a verdict.
I stopped inches from Vanessa.
"You were right."
She couldn't speak.
"I did lose something after the accident."
I looked around the room.
"I lost every person who only loved my power."
Then I turned toward Clara.
Knelt on one knee.
Not because I had to.
Because I wanted to.
Holding a small velvet box, I smiled.
"The woman who treated me with kindness when everyone believed I was broken..."
"...is the only woman worthy of standing beside me."
Tears filled Clara's eyes.
"Will you marry me?"
She whispered,
"Yes."
Security entered.
Vanessa.
Daniel.
Martin.
The mechanic.
All arrested together.
As police led them away, Vanessa screamed,
"You tricked us!"
I looked back only once.
"No."
"I simply gave you the chance to show the world who you really were."
And in the end...
The wheelchair had never been a prison.
It had been a mirror.
May you like
And everyone who laughed at the man sitting in it...
Was destroyed by the reflection they never expected to see.
