CHAPTER 6 — THE TRIAL THAT SHOCKED THE CITY

The courthouse was overflowing before sunrise.
News vans lined every street.
People weren't there to see me.
They were there to see the woman who had mocked a man she believed was permanently broken—and now stood accused of helping plan his murder.
Vanessa entered in a cream-colored suit, her wrists hidden beneath expensive sleeves.
She tried to smile for the cameras.
No one smiled back.
Inside the courtroom, the prosecutor displayed the evidence one piece at a time.
The forged insurance documents.
The payments made to the mechanic.
Phone records connecting Daniel, Martin, and Vanessa in the hours before my car crashed.
Then came the recording no one expected.
Marcus stepped into the witness box and handed over a small digital recorder.
"I installed this after Mr. Whitmore began receiving threats."
The room fell silent.
Vanessa's voice echoed through the speakers.
"If the brakes fail, Ethan dies. If he survives... we'll make sure he signs everything over."
Daniel's voice followed.
"If he's paralyzed, it's even better. Dead men don't transfer companies."
Gasps swept through the courtroom.
Vanessa's face turned white.
She shot to her feet.
"They edited that!"
The prosecutor smiled calmly.
"We anticipated that claim."
A forensic audio specialist testified that the recording had never been altered.
Then came the biggest surprise.
The mechanic walked into court.
Not in handcuffs.
As a witness.
"I lied to the police," he admitted, his voice shaking. "Vanessa paid me two hundred thousand dollars to weaken the brake line. Daniel promised another half million after Ethan died."
Vanessa screamed, "You're lying!"
The mechanic lowered his head.
"No... I've been lying for two years. Today I'm finally telling the truth."
May you like
For the first time since the trial began...
Vanessa looked afraid.
