CHAPTER 1 — The Last Visitor
Emily Carter was only twelve years old when the doctors quietly told her mother there was nothing left to do.
The cancer had spread too far.
Every treatment had failed.
Every promise had turned into another goodbye.
On a warm afternoon, sunlight poured through the hospital window as Emily sat on the edge of her bed wearing a thin hospital gown, her small suitcase already packed beside her.
Not because she was going home.
Because everyone believed she wouldn't need it much longer.
Her mother, Sarah, forced herself to smile, even though she had cried every night for the past six months. She held Emily's trembling hands and whispered,
"I'm so sorry... I couldn't save you."
Emily shook her head gently.
"You already did, Mom."
Those words shattered Sarah's heart.
Outside the room, nurses quietly wiped away tears. Even doctors avoided making eye contact. No one wanted to watch another child lose a battle she never deserved to fight.
Then...
A man in a dark gray suit walked down the hallway carrying an old leather briefcase.
No flowers.
No balloons.
No family.
He stopped outside Emily's room and stared at the name on the door.
Emily Carter.
His hands began to shake.
When he finally stepped inside, Sarah immediately stood up.
"I'm sorry... visiting hours are over."
The stranger ignored her.
Instead, he looked directly at Emily.
Tears filled his eyes.
"You've grown so much..."
Emily frowned.
"I... do I know you?"
The man slowly opened his briefcase.
Inside was a faded photograph.
It showed a newborn baby wrapped in a pink blanket...
...being held by the very same man standing in front of her.
Sarah's face turned completely white.
"No..."
She whispered.
"That photo was destroyed."
The stranger looked at her with unbearable sadness.
"No, Sarah."
"You only destroyed the copy."
He reached into the briefcase one more time and carefully placed a sealed envelope on Emily's bed.
"The hospital lied to both of you."
"And everything you believe about Emily's illness..."
