CHAPTER 6 — The Man Everyone Thought Was Dead

Without the DNA file, the entire case could fall apart.
Police searched Daniel's home for hours.
Nothing.
The hard drives were gone.
The documents had vanished.
Even the security cameras had been erased.
Victoria looked victorious.
"I warned you."
"There is no case."
News stations quickly began questioning whether Daniel had fabricated everything.
Social media turned against him overnight.
Emily watched the television from her hospital bed as strangers called her family liars.
She cried silently.
Maybe the truth would disappear forever.
Then...
A black SUV stopped outside the hospital.
An elderly man stepped out, walking slowly with a cane.
Every police officer froze.
Dr. Vance's face turned ghost white.
Victoria whispered one name.
"It can't be..."
The old man entered the room carrying a dusty metal box.
"My name is Thomas Brooks."
Daniel burst into tears.
"Dad..."
Everyone believed Thomas had died in a house fire eleven years earlier.
But he had been living in hiding.
Waiting.
Watching.
Collecting evidence.
Thomas placed the metal box on Emily's bed.
Inside were dozens of videotapes, signed affidavits, financial records, and one tiny hospital bracelet.
The bracelet still carried the name:
Emily Carter.
Thomas looked directly at the detectives.
"I copied everything before they tried to kill me."
"I knew one day they'd come back for this little girl."
Dr. Vance staggered backward.
Victoria's confidence vanished.
But before the police could arrest anyone...
Thomas pulled one final envelope from the box.
"It gets worse."
"The baby switch wasn't the beginning."
"It was only the second crime."
Emily frowned.
"If that wasn't the first..."
Thomas slowly opened the envelope.
"There was another baby..."
"...who disappeared that same night."

And according to the birth records...
That missing child was never found.
