CHAPTER 2 — The Envelope That Changed Everything
The room fell into complete silence.
Sarah stared at the envelope as though it were a bomb.
Her hands refused to touch it.
"Who are you?" she demanded.
The stranger took a deep breath.
"My name is Daniel Brooks."
"I've spent twelve years searching for this child."
Emily looked back and forth between the two adults, completely confused.
"My mom said my father died before I was born."
Daniel slowly closed his eyes.
"That's what someone wanted you to believe."
Sarah suddenly shouted,
"Stop!"
"You have no right to come here after all these years!"
Daniel's voice cracked.
"I never left."
"I was told both of you died."
Emily's heart pounded.
Nothing made sense anymore.
Daniel nodded toward the envelope.
"Open it."
With trembling fingers, Sarah finally broke the seal.
Inside were official hospital records...
DNA reports...
Birth documents...
And one page highlighted in bright yellow.
Sarah's breathing stopped.
Emily wasn't dying because her cancer had become untreatable.
She was dying because...
For twelve years, the hospital had been treating the wrong patient.
Her entire medical history had been switched with another child shortly after birth.
Every chemotherapy session.
Every surgery.
Every painful procedure.
Had been based on someone else's diagnosis.
Emily looked at the papers...
Then at her mother.
Then at Daniel.
"Does that mean..."
"...I'm not supposed to be dying?"
Before anyone could answer...
The hospital room door burst open.
Three security guards rushed inside.
Behind them stood the hospital director.
His face had turned pale.
He wasn't there to comfort Emily.
He was there for one reason.
"Take that envelope."
