Chapter 1 - THE POWDER KEG

The air in the Peninsula Hotel ballroom didn't just turn cold—it shattered.

Three hundred of Chicago’s most powerful elite froze in place. The faint clinking of crystal glasses ceased entirely. The flash of camera bulbs, which had been steady all night, paused in a collective gasp before erupting into a frenzy of aggressive white light.

Victor Salvatore stepped back, his dark suit crisp, his cold gray eyes unflinching as he looked down at Lena. His breath was still warm against her cheek, but the weight of his whisper—“Let him see what he lost”—vibrated through her bones like a war cry.

Beside her, Derek Hail looked as though he had been struck by lightning. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, ash-white. His fingers, which had been digging brutally into Lena’s lower back just moments ago, went limp with sheer, unadulterated shock.

Then, the humiliation set in.

"You... you bastard!" Derek choked out, his voice cracking violently as his hands flew toward his waist.

Click. Click. Click.

Around the perimeter of the room, six men in tailored dark jackets reached beneath their coats. The metallic slide of suppressed pistols clearing leather holsters echoed clearly over the stunned silence of the crowd. Derek’s personal security team stepped forward, their faces twisted in panic.

But Victor didn’t even flinch. He didn't reach for a weapon. He didn't look at the guns pointed at his heart. He simply raised his right hand, making a slight, almost lazy gesture with two fingers.

Immediately, two men stepped out from the shadows near the floor-to-ceiling windows. They didn't draw weapons—they didn't need to. The sheer presence of the Salvatore syndicate’s enforcers was enough to make Derek’s security pause, their boots sliding backward against the polished marble floor.

"I would advise against making a scene in front of the Mayor, Hail," Victor said softly. His voice carried an unnatural calm that made the hairs on the back of Lena’s neck stand up. "It reflects poorly on your company’s public stock."

"She is my fiancée!" Derek roared, his composure completely evaporating. Veins bulged along his neck as he stepped toward Victor, his fists clenched. "She belongs to me!"

"She belongs to no one," Victor replied smoothly, turning his back on Derek as if the man were nothing more than a stray dog barking at a passing car.

Victor held out his hand toward Lena. His gray eyes softened just a fraction—not with romance, but with an unspoken promise of protection that felt far more dangerous than anything Derek had ever threatened.

"Miss Marlo," Victor said, his tone low and commanding. "Your carriage is waiting. Unless, of course, you wish to accompany Mr. Hail to the terrace?"

Lena’s heart slammed against her ribs. The terrace. Where there were no cameras. Where there were no witnesses. Where Derek would tear her apart for what had just happened.

She looked at Derek. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, filled with a murderous rage that promised absolute agony if she stayed. Then she looked at Victor—a man she didn't know, a kingpin whose name made billionaires tremble, a stranger who had just publicly claimed her in front of the entire city.

Choosing Victor wasn't choosing safety. It was choosing a different kind of fire.

Lena drew a ragged breath, lifted her chin, and placed her trembling, silver-gloved hand directly into Victor Salvatore’s palm.

The ballroom exploded into screams and frantic whispering as Victor turned, guiding Lena through the parting crowd like a ghost through fog, leaving Derek Hail standing alone under the harsh chandelier lights, humiliated and burning for blood.
