Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF VENGEANCE

Derek screamed as a high-caliber bullet tore through his shoulder, knocking him off Lena and sending the syringe flying into the darkness.

"Down!" a voice roared.

The heavy wooden doors of the warehouse slammed open as armored vehicles smashed straight through the barricades, blinding headlights illuminating the industrial floor. Fully armed men in tactical gear poured out, opening fire with terrifying precision.

Derek’s bodyguards barely had time to raise their weapons before they were dropped to the floor, immobilized by non-lethal suppressed fire.

Through the fog and smoke stepped Victor Salvatore.

He moved with absolute, terrifying calm, a heavy silver pistol held easily at his side. His gray eyes swept the room until they landed on Lena, bleeding on the cold concrete floor.

For a split second, the cold mask Victor wore cracked, revealing an ocean of absolute fury.

"Derek Hail," Victor said, his voice echoing like thunder through the warehouse. "You were warned."

Derek scrambled backward against a rusted support pillar, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his eyes wide with terror. "Victor! Wait! This is a corporate dispute! We can negotiate! My family—"

Victor didn't negotiate.

He stepped forward, kicking Derek hard in the chest, pinning him against the steel pillar. Victor raised his pistol, pressing the warm barrel directly between Derek’s eyes.

"Victor, stop!" Lena cried out, staggering to her feet, clutching her bruised ribs.

Victor paused, his finger resting on the trigger, his cold gaze shifting slightly toward her. "He hurt you. He threatened your family. He dies."

"If you kill him here, you become the monster he said you were!" Lena pleaded, her voice shaking as she took a cautious step toward him. "The police will hunt you. His company will spin this! You’ll lose everything you worked to build!"

"I don't care about the company, Lena," Victor said softly.

"I do!" Lena shouted. "Don't ruin your life for a coward like him! Give him to the law! Show the world what he really is!"

Victor stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. The silence in the warehouse was deafening, broken only by the sound of Derek’s heavy, panicked breathing.

Finally, slowly, Victor lowered the gun.

"You are lucky, Hail," Victor whispered chillingly. "My guest has mercy. I do not."

Victor turned his back on Derek, signaling his men to secure the area. He walked over to Lena, taking off his heavy wool coat and wrapping it gently around her shivering shoulders.

"Is your father safe?" Lena asked, clutching his coat tightly around herself.

"My team secured his hospital floor twenty minutes ago," Victor replied gently. "The man Derek sent is already in custody. Your father is safe, Lena."

Lena collapsed against Victor’s chest, the exhaustion and fear finally breaking her down. Victor hesitated for a moment before wrapping his arms around her, holding her tightly against the storm.

But as they walked out of the warehouse, neither of them saw Derek’s bleeding hand reaching into his inner pocket, pulling out a hidden, secondary device—a remote detonator.
