Chapter 2 - THE DEVIL'S SANCTUARY

The glass-and-steel doors of the heavy armored SUV slammed shut, cutting off the deafening roar of reporters, flashing cameras, and shouting security guards outside the Peninsula.
Inside the vehicle, the silence was suffocating.
Lena sat pressed against the leather seats, her body shaking uncontrollably. The adrenaline that had carried her across the ballroom floor was rapidly fading, leaving behind the agonizing, throb of her injuries. Her ribs burned where Derek had bruised her days ago; her lower back throbbed from his fresh marks.
Victor sat opposite her, pouring two fingers of amber liquid into a crystal tumbler. He didn't look at her immediately. He simply swirled the liquor, watching the ice roll against the glass.
"Drink," he said, handing the glass to her.
"I don't want it," Lena rasped, her voice trembling. She kept her eyes fixed on his hands—strong, clean hands that had just shattered her life in a single evening. "Who are you? Why did you do that? Do you have any idea what you've done to me?!"
Victor took a slow sip of his drink. "I saved you from a man who was going to break your neck on a balcony."
"You ruined me!" Lena cried out, tears finally spilling over her lashes, burning against her pale skin. "Derek controls everything! My family’s debt, my father’s medical bills, my reputation! By kissing me—by pulling that insane stunt—you just signed my death warrant! He will kill me!"
"He will try," Victor corrected quietly. "Which is why you are not going back to him."
"I don't even know who you are!"
Victor leaned forward into the soft light of the streetlamps filtering through the tinted bulletproof glass. His gray eyes locked onto hers with a terrifying intensity.
"My name is Victor Salvatore. I control the shipping docks, the underground banking, and half the city council of Chicago. Your fiancé—or rather, your ex-fiancé—owes forty million dollars to my family’s firm. He used you as collateral for a loan he couldn't pay back."
Lena’s breath caught in her throat. "What?"
"Derek Hail didn't want to marry you out of love, Lena," Victor said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "He wanted your family’s land rights along the river to secure his deal with me. And when he realized he was going to lose, he decided to break you so thoroughly that you’d never have the courage to run away."
Victor reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a manila folder, tossing it onto the leather seat beside her. Lena opened it with shaking hands. Inside were medical reports, photos of her injuries taken from surveillance cameras over the last three months, and legal documents detailing her father’s stolen estate.
"He was going to kill your father next, Lena," Victor added ruthlessly. "To make sure you inherited the land immediately."
Lena stared at the papers, horror choking the air out of her lungs. "Why do you care? Why are you telling me this?"

Victor looked out the window as the SUV sped into the iron gates of a massive, fortress-like estate on the outskirts of the city.
"Because ten years ago, your father saved my brother's life," Victor said softly. "I don't owe Derek Hail anything. But I owe your family a debt. And tonight, the war for Chicago begins."
