Chapter 8 - THE FINAL REVELATION

Victor let out a long, quiet breath. For the first time since she had met him, the dangerous mafia lord looked vulnerable.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out an old, faded photograph, handing it to her.

Lena looked at the picture. It was a photo of a young girl—no older than twelve—standing in a sunlit park, holding a small wooden music box. Beside her was a young boy with dark hair and bruised knees, sitting on a bench, looking at her with wide, grateful eyes.

Lena gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "That's... that's me. At the city park in West Chicago."

"Twenty years ago, my father was murdered by a rival family," Victor said, his voice low and painful. "I ran away into the streets, bleeding, terrified, and starving. I hid behind a bench in that park for three days. I thought I was going to die."

He looked at Lena with a depth of emotion that made her heart stop.

"A little girl walked up to me," Victor continued softly. "She didn't know who I was. She didn't know my family was dangerous. She just saw a boy who was hurting. She gave me her lunch, wrapped her scarf around my bleeding hand, and played that little music box until I stopped shaking."

Victor stepped closer, his hand rising gently to touch the side of her face—not with control, not with possession, but with reverent tenderness.

"You gave me a reason to survive that night, Lena," Victor whispered. "I swore that if I ever built an empire strong enough, I would protect you from the dark world I lived in. When I saw Derek putting his hands on you... when I saw the pain beneath your dress... I knew I couldn't stay in the shadows any longer."

Lena stared at him, tears filling her eyes as the distant, forgotten memory rushed back into her mind. The little boy with the bruised knees. The scared orphan she had given her scarf to all those years ago.

"It was always you," Lena breathed.

"It was always you," Victor affirmed gently.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the conservatory slammed open.

Victor’s chief of security rushed into the room, his face pale, holding a high-encrypted satellite phone.

"Sir! We have a massive problem," the guard shouted, his voice shaking. "The body the coast guard pulled from the river... the DNA results just came back from the lab!"

Victor shielded Lena behind him instantly, his eyes narrowing. "What is it?"

The guard swallowed hard, looking at Lena with sheer horror.

"The body wasn't Derek Hail," the guard whispered. "It was his twin brother—the one who disappeared five years ago. Derek swapped clothes with him in the fire. Derek is alive, sir... and he just boarded a private jet landing in London with your sister on board."

The room plunged into absolute silence.

Victor’s gray eyes turned back into liquid ice. He looked at Lena, reaching down to gently grasp her hand, pulling her close against his side.

"It seems," Victor whispered, a lethal, dark smile touching his lips, "our story is just beginning, Miss Marlo. Pack your bags. We're going to England."
