Chapter 17 - The Betrayal WithinThe study grew dead silent, save for the faint sound of the ocean waves crashing against the distant cliffs. Declan remained standing behind his desk, his expression a mask of cold, absolute granite. He didn't blink as he reached out and untied the thick twine holding the manila envelope together.

Inside lay a single sheet of heavy parchment paper, watermarked with the official seal of the old Shaw family estate, alongside a micro-cassette audio tape and a handwritten ledger page dated four years ago—the exact week Aaron had supposedly fled the country with six million dollars.

Declan picked up the parchment. His eyes scanned the familiar handwriting: If the audit goes through, Declan will execute Aaron immediately. To secure our position on the board, we let Aaron take the fall, frame the discrepancy on his terminal, and split the reserves evenly through Graham’s offshore accounts. — V.S.

"V.S.," Declan muttered, the initials tasting like ash on his tongue. He looked up, his gaze locking onto the detective with a terrifying intensity. "Who had access to this stationery four years ago?"

"Only three people in the entire organization," Miller answered quietly, leaning forward. "Your father’s old advisor, Victor Vance Senior... Graham Pike... and your cousin, Vincent Shaw."

Declan’s breath caught in his chest. Vincent Shaw. His own blood—a cousin he had sent to manage the European shipping division in Zurich four years ago, believing he was safely removed from the power struggles of the domestic syndicate.

"Vincent has been running the European ports under our banner this entire time," Declan said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "He sent regular reports. He swore allegiance after Graham’s purge."

"He swore allegiance because he thought Graham took the secret to his grave," Miller corrected, sliding a second document across the desk—a digital printout of recent wire transfers originating from a Swiss bank account controlled by Vincent Shaw, routed directly to the Vanguard syndicate's hidden reserves. "Vincent didn't just help frame Aaron. He was the architect of the entire conspiracy. He wanted the European division entirely independent of your control, and to do that, he had to break the Shaw family from the inside out."

Declan didn't speak. He walked slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out across the lawn where Aaron and Mia were still laughing with Penny as they painted the little birdhouse. For a moment, the brutal reality of the underworld washed over him again—the eternal truth that the sharpest knives are always held by the people standing closest to your back.

"Thank you, Detective," Declan said quietly without turning around.

Miller stood up, smoothing his rumpled jacket. "What are you going to do, Mr. Shaw?"

"Nothing dramatic," Declan replied, his voice chillingly calm. "I’m simply going to invite my cousin home for dinner."
