Chapter 3 - The Shot That Shattered the EmpireThe bullet didn't come from Declan.

Across the length of the long dinner table, Captain Vance—the oldest and most feared veteran of the Shaw organization, a man who had served under Declan’s father since the docks were built—held a smoking revolver.
Graham stumbled forward, dropping his weapon as a red bloom spread rapidly across his tailored white shirt. He hit the marble floor with a dull, heavy thud, his fingers clawing uselessly at the polished stone as his breath came in ragged, shallow gasps.
"You... old fool," Graham coughed, blood bubbling at the corner of his lips. "The federal task force... they already have the files... if I go down, the whole house of cards... burns with me..."
Declan walked slowly toward the dying man, stopping just inches from his boots. He looked down at the man he had trusted more than his own blood for over a decade. No anger contorted his face; there was only an infinite, terrifying emptiness.
"The house is already burning, Graham," Declan said quietly. "You just forgot that I built it out of stone, not glass."
Graham’s eyes rolled back, his head hitting the marble with a final, definitive stillness. The private ballroom remained dead silent, save for the tinny, persistent melody of the little wooden music box still playing its lullaby in Mia's hands.
Declan turned slowly back toward the young mother and the little girl. The thirty captains at the table stood up in unison, every man bowing his head in silent acknowledgment of the undisputed king of the underworld. But Declan ignored them all. He knelt back down on one knee in front of Penny, ignoring the blood pooling a few yards away.
"Your papa isn't gone, Penny," Declan said, his voice husky, carrying a warmth that hadn't surfaced in four long years.
Penny tilted her head, her lower lip trembling slightly. "He's coming home?"

"He's coming home," Declan promised, reaching out to gently straighten the untied lace on her small shoe. He then looked up at Mia, his green-flecked eyes meeting hers with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat. "And this time, nobody will ever touch my family again."
Mia clutched the music box to her chest, tears finally spilling over her lashes as the terrifying, beautiful reality set in: the wolf had found his key, and the castle gates were finally locked against the world.
