Chapter 6 - Shadows in the BoardroomThree days later, the high-rise corporate headquarters of Shaw Enterprises in downtown Chicago hummed with a quiet, lethal efficiency. Down on the forty-fifth floor, the executive boardroom—a sprawling chamber of imported Italian marble and floor-to-ceiling bulletproof glass—looked out over the sprawling metropolis below.

Declan Shaw sat at the head of the massive obsidian conference table. To his right sat Aaron, still pale and moving with a slight limp, but wearing a tailored charcoal suit that instantly restored his commanding presence as the former chief financial officer of the syndicate. Flanking them were twelve remaining captains, hand-selected by Vance to replace the purged loyalists who had served Graham.

"The financial audits from District 7 are complete," Aaron said, sliding a thick ledger across the polished surface. "Graham wasn't just skimming from our shipping lanes. For the past three years, he was quietly liquidating our secondary assets and funneling the capital into offshore accounts controlled by the Vanguard Syndicate—our primary competitors on the East Coast."

A murmur of controlled fury rippled through the table. Captain Vance leaned forward, resting his gnarled hands on the wood. "Vanguard has been quiet lately. Too quiet. They knew Graham was inside our walls. They thought decapitating us from within would make us ripe for a hostile takeover."

Declan didn't look at the ledger. His eyes were fixed on a small silver object resting beside his coffee cup—the braided black leather bracelet with the silver button and the initials A.S.S.

"They miscalculated," Declan said, his voice cold and flat. "They assumed that because I isolated myself, I had grown weak. They assumed that a broken family couldn't rebuild its walls."

He stood up slowly, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling window. Down on the street below, tiny black cars moved in synchronized patterns through the morning traffic.

"Vanguard thinks they control the eastern ports," Declan continued without turning around. "They think our logistics network is paralyzed without Graham. Aaron, pull up the active manifest for the midnight freighter coming out of Rotterdam."

Aaron tapped a key on his tablet, and a massive holographic projection flickered to life in the center of the room, displaying a complex web of shipping routes, satellite coordinates, and cargo manifests. "Container ship The Orion, carrying fifty million in unregistered electronics and tactical gear, scheduled to dock at Pier 12 at midnight."

"Whose jurisdiction is Pier 12?" Declan asked.

"Marcus Vance," the veteran captain answered immediately with a sharp grin. "My nephew. His men control every crane, every forklift, and every security camera from here to the harbor."

Declan turned back to face the table, his obsidian eyes gleaming with cold precision. "Marcus, I want the ship cleared, unloaded, and secured by 1:00 AM. But don't touch the Vanguard cargo agents waiting at the gate. Let them walk right into the warehouse. Let them think they're stepping into an empty house."

"And when they get inside?" Marcus asked, his smile widening into a predatory grin.

"We show them what happens when you mistake a wolf's silence for surrender," Declan said softly. "Prepare the teams. Tonight, we take back the city."
