Chapter 12 - The Tabloid Tempest

Within forty-eight hours, headlines erupted across internet gossip portals, viral news feeds, and daytime morning shows:
> "FORGOTTEN FAMILY: Billionaire Tech CEO Lena Hartwell Accused of Leaving Ex-Husband and Sick Mother-in-Law Penniless!" > "EXPOSED: Did the 'Empress of AI' Steal Her Tech Empire From Her Ex-Husband's Dying Company?"
Edited footage of Evelyn crying in a wheelchair outside a fake clinic swept through social media, gaining millions of views. Preston appeared on a syndicated late-night interview, wearing a faded suit, wiping tears from his eyes as he claimed Lena had systematically brainwashed his daughters and fled the country to strip him of his parental rights.
Public outrage sparked instantly. The court of public opinion was ruthless. Online trolls swarmed Hartwell Dynamics' public forums, demanding boycotts and investigations. Shares of the company dipped three percent in pre-market trading.
Inside her penthouse office in London, Lena sat at her executive desk, watching the televised interview of Preston weeping on screen.
Beside her, her chief legal counsel, Marcus Sterling, looked grim. "Miss Hartwell, the PR firm advises a formal statement expressing sympathy while asserting legal facts. Should we issue a non-comment?"
Lena took a slow sip of Earl Grey tea, her expression as smooth and serene as polished glass.
"A statement?" Lena laughed softly, a delicate, chilling sound. "No, Marcus. When a snake comes out of the grass to bite you, you don't offer it a bandage. You let it coil around you until it squeezes itself to death."

"What are your instructions, ma'am?"
"Contact the network," Lena said, her eyes flashing with cold blue steel. "Tell them I accept Preston’s challenge for a live, unscripted, global broadcast interview tomorrow evening. I will answer every single charge in front of fifty million viewers."
