Chapter 11 - The Bitter Alliance

Two years after the humiliating confrontation in Zurich, the ash of the Hale family's empire had grown completely cold.
Preston lived in a dilapidated walk-up in industrial New Jersey, earning a meager living as a door-to-door sales contractor. The arrogance that once defined him was replaced by a hollow, jittery paranoia. But he wasn't the only one suffocating in the dark.
In a dimly lit diner on the outskirts of Manhattan, Preston sat across from his mother, Evelyn, and his half-brother, Julian. The very brother who had fathered Brielle’s illegitimate child and helped collapse Hale Tech was now equally broke. Julian’s high-stakes real estate gambles had failed without the Hartwell patent license, leaving him drowning in debt to offshore loan sharks.
"We need a strategy," Evelyn hissed, her manicured nails now chipped and unkept. Her eyes burned with a venomous obsession. "Lena is worth over four billion dollars now. Four billion! And my granddaughters are sitting on that fortune while we eat garbage!"
"She sealed every loophole, Mother," Julian sneered, sipping stale black coffee. "Her legal team is an iron wall. We can't touch her corporate assets."
"We don't go after her assets," Preston whispered, his voice raspy. A dark, twisted desperation gleamed in his eyes. "We go after her reputation. The public loves a story about a cold-hearted billionaire who abandons her aging in-laws and leaves her ex-husband to rot in poverty."
"A smear campaign?" Julian raised an eyebrow.
"A media ambush," Preston corrected, a sickening grin spreading across his face. "We launch a coordinated smear effort through major tabloids. We play the victims. We make the world believe Lena Hartwell is a ruthless monster who stole my intellectual property and kidnapped my children."

Evelyn clutched her son's hand, her eyes widening with manic approval. "Yes... she cares about her pristine image. When the public outrage threatens her stock price, she’ll be forced to pay us off just to make us shut up."
They gathered their remaining pennies to hire a sleazy tabloid PR agent, entirely unaware that every word spoken in that booth was being picked up by a hidden directional microphone.
