Chapter 5 - The Snake Uncoils

While the ruins of Hale Enterprises began to burn, Preston drove back downtown to Brielle’s luxury apartment—the high-rise unit he had personally paid six months of advance rent on.

He burst through the door, his eyes bloodshot, fists clenched. "Brielle!"

Brielle was in the bedroom, packing high-end designer suitcases. Her calm, calculating demeanor was fully back. She didn't look scared; she looked mildly annoyed.

"What are you doing?" Preston demanded, his chest heaving. "Who is the father of that baby, Brielle?! Answer me!"

Brielle didn't stop folding her silk dresses. She threw them into an open Louis Vuitton trunk.

"If you really want to know, Preston," she said coolly, looking up at him with cold detachment, "it’s Julian's."

Preston froze as if he had been struck by lightning. "Julian? My... my brother?"

"Half-brother," Brielle corrected with a sharp smile. "Julian knew your father’s estate was tied up in family trusts, and he knew how desperate you and your pathetic mother were for a male heir to outshine him. He paid me to give you exactly what you wanted."

"You... you lied to me for eight months!" Preston screamed, taking a step toward her. "You let me destroy my marriage!"

"I didn't destroy anything, Preston," Brielle spat back, her eyes flashing with contempt. "You destroyed your marriage the second you treated your wife like an incubator and your daughters like trash! You were so blinded by your ridiculous vanity that you swallowed every lie I told you without asking for a single blood test! You did this to yourself."

She zipped up her trunk, grabbed her handbag, and walked right past him. At the doorway, she paused and looked back over her shoulder.

"Oh, by the way," Brielle added, tossing a key card onto the entryway table. "Julian already pulled his capital out of your company this morning. You’re ruined, Preston. Don't bother calling me."

The door slammed shut, leaving Preston standing in the silent, empty apartment, surrounded by the wreckage of his own foolishness.
