Chapter 22 - The Vance Connection

That evening, the rain turned into a heavy alpine downpour.
Inside the private library of the Chateau de Bellevue, Lord Henry Vance stood before the roaring fireplace, swirling a glass of aged scotch. Standing beside him was Dr. Karen Vance—the very obstetrician whose sharp, cold questions in Room 304 of St. Jude Medical Center had shattered Preston Hale’s life eleven years ago.
"It’s time to tell her, Henry," Karen said quietly, adjusting her silver-rimmed spectacles. "The Vanguard is moving faster than we anticipated. They know Julian’s old offshore accounts held the backdoor decryption keys."
The library doors opened, and Lena stepped inside, her keen eyes shifting between Henry and Karen.
"You knew," Lena said calmly, her voice carrying no anger, only an intense, demanding clarity. "Dr. Vance wasn't just a doctor at St. Jude’s. She is your sister."
Henry lowered his glass and turned to face Lena. He looked at her with unyielding respect and deep affection.
"Yes, Lena," Henry admitted softly. "Eleven years ago, long before Preston asked for a divorce, my family’s intelligence network caught wind of what Julian Hale and his corporate sponsors were trying to do. They weren't just trying to usurp your father’s estate; they were using Preston as a front to steal your family’s quantum encryption patents for a global cartel known as the Sovereign Vanguard."
Karen stepped forward, her professional demeanor softening. "Lena, when Preston brought Brielle into my clinic that morning, it wasn't a coincidence that I was assigned to her ultrasound. Henry had instructed me to run full genomic verification on the spot. I already had Preston’s medical file in my hands before he even stepped into the room. We knew the baby wasn't his. We knew he was being played."
Lena stood completely still, processing the intricate web that had surrounded her life for over a decade.
"You protected me," Lena stated softly. "Even before I knew who you were."
"We protected the truth," Henry corrected gently, taking a step toward her and holding her hands. "Because your father, Sir Arthur, helped my family dismantle the Vanguard’s European operations twenty years ago. You were never just a victim of a foolish husband’s arrogance, Lena. You were the target of a war. Preston was simply the disposable pawn they used to try and break you."

"And now?" Lena asked, her eyes glittering with dangerous resolve. "They think they can use Julian’s ghost to buy out my legacy?"
"They think they are dealing with a defensive corporation," Henry smiled, a cold, aristocratic edge entering his tone. "They have no idea they are dealing with you."
