The Westchester estate was brighter than it had ever been. The iron gates remained open, welcoming sunlight, gentle breezes, and the joyous laughter of children playing on the lawn.
It was a crisp, golden Saturday afternoon.
Lily, now eight years old and standing tall in a bright yellow sundress, stood beside her father on the emerald lawn. With a swift, confident flick of her wrist, she launched a freshly folded paper airplane high up into the clear blue sky.
The paper plane caught a warm thermal updraft, soaring gracefully over the sprawling gardens before landing gently near the base of the ancient oak tree.
Lily cheered, clapping her hands together. “Did you see that, Daddy? It flew all the way across the yard!”
Dominic knelt down, wrapping his arms around his daughter and pulling her close against his chest. He looked up at the endless blue sky, feeling an overwhelming wave of peace settle deep into his soul.
The promise he had made to Sophia in that cramped Queens apartment years ago had been fulfilled. They were no longer running from ghosts, hiding in the shadows, or dodging bullets on Fifth Avenue.
