Chapter 3 - The Ghost from the PastThe silence in the narrow hallway of the Queens apartment building was thick enough to suffocate them both.

Seven years.
Seven years since Dominic Moretti had searched every corner of Europe and America for the woman who had vanished from his locked estate without a trace, leaving behind nothing but a shattered heart and unanswered questions.
“You…” Dominic stepped forward, his massive frame trembling as he reached out a hand, as if afraid she would evaporate like morning mist if he touched her. “Sophia. How is this possible? My men searched for you for years. They told me you were gone—that you left the country!”
“They didn't lie,” Sophia whispered, a tear finally breaking free and tracking down her hollow cheek. She coughed softly, pressing a thin hand to her mouth. “I paid a private security captain to hide me. I had to, Dominic. When I found out I was pregnant... I knew what your world was. I knew your enemies would use a child to tear you apart piece by piece.”
Dominic’s chest heaved. The ruthless mafia boss, the feared billionaire who made corporate empires crumble with a single phone call, looked utterly destroyed.
“A child…” Dominic choked out, his voice dropping to a raw, broken whisper. “You had my child?”
Before Sophia could answer, a small, familiar voice drifted from the hallway down the tiny apartment corridor.
“Mom? Who’s at the door? Is it the grocery delivery?”
Step by light step, a small figure appeared around the corner.
Six-year-old Lily stood wearing her faded yellow dress, holding her battered brown teddy bear under one arm, blinking her serious blue eyes at the tall stranger standing in their doorway.

Then, Lily blinked again, squinting as she looked up at Dominic’s face.
“Hey,” Lily said, her small voice cutting through the heavy air. “I know you. You’re the man who fell down on Fifth Avenue.”
