Chapter 6 - The Golden CageThe Westchester estate looked like a medieval castle wrapped in modern luxury under the midnight stars.

When the medical helicopter touched down on the private helipad, Sophia was transferred seamlessly into a specialized ground ambulance that carried her directly to the master suite on the ground floor, where a team of private nurses awaited her.

Lily, clutching her battered brown teddy bear, stepped out onto the gravel driveway holding Dominic’s hand.

She stared up at the towering stone pillars, the sprawling lawns, and the glowing windows of the mansion with wide, astonished blue eyes.

“Is this a castle?” Lily asked, looking up at Dominic.

“Something like that,” Dominic smiled gently, squeezing her small hand. “And you’re the princess.”

“Does the princess have to eat broccoli?”

Dominic laughed—a sound that felt foreign within these stone walls, yet entirely right. “Only if she wants to. But tonight, she can have whatever she wants.”

For the next three days, Dominic dedicated every waking moment to bridging the gap between his terrifying world and Lily’s innocent reality. He read her stories, helped her build paper airplanes, and watched with quiet adoration as she sat by Sophia’s bedside, chatting endlessly about the flowers in the garden.

But shadows cannot be outrun forever.

On the fourth night, while Lily slept soundly in the adjoining nursery, Dominic sat by Sophia’s bed, holding her fragile hand as her breathing grew fainter.

“You gave her my eyes, Sophia,” Dominic whispered, his voice cracking.

Sophia smiled weakly, her fingers twitching against his palm. “She has your stubbornness, too. She’s going to change the world, Dominic... just promise me you’ll let her choose her own path.”

“I swear it,” Dominic said.

Sophia closed her eyes, letting out a long, peaceful sigh. “Thank you... for finding us.”
