Chapter 9 - The Final BreathTwo days later, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, peaceful autumn morning.

Inside the master suite of the Westchester estate, the sunlight streamed softly through the sheer curtains.

Sophia’s breathing had grown very faint. The monitors beside her bed ticked with slow, measured precision.

Lily sat on a small stool beside her mother’s bed, holding her hand, while Dominic stood quietly at the foot of the mattress, his hand resting gently on his daughter’s shoulder.

Sophia slowly opened her eyes. They weren't clouded anymore; for a brief, miraculous moment, they were crystal clear, shining with absolute peace.

“Dominic...” she whispered.

He stepped closer, kneeling beside her. “I’m here, Sophia.”

“Take care of her,” Sophia smiled, her thumb brushing against Lily’s small hand. “Teach her... how to fly.”

“I will,” Dominic promised, his voice thick with unshed tears. “I swear to you, Sophia, she will never know fear.”

Sophia looked at Lily, her green eyes filled with boundless love. “Be strong, my sweet girl... your daddy will always keep you safe.”

With one final, feather-light sigh, Sophia’s hand relaxed.

The monitor flatlined with a long, steady tone.

Lily didn't scream. She didn't cry out. She simply leaned forward, kissed her mother’s pale cheek, and buried her face against Dominic’s chest.

Dominic wrapped his arms around his daughter, holding her against the cruelties of the world, feeling the weight of a promise that would dictate every breath he took for the rest of his life.
