Chapter 4 - THE BEDSIDE PROMISE

Dawn broke over Massachusetts General, washing the sterile white walls in pale, watery light.

Maxwell sat in the hard plastic chair beside Emily’s bed, holding a folded piece of paper in his palm: the rapid-sequence DNA test results printed out by the hospital's private lab at 4:00 AM.

PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.999%.

Emily stirred, her small fingers twitching against the blanket. She opened her heavy eyes, blinking against the morning light, and looked up at him. Her lavender cap had slipped slightly, revealing soft tufts of brown hair.

“Maxwell?” she whispered, her voice dry. “Are you still here?”

Maxwell leaned forward, pressing his forehead gently against her small, warm hand, letting the tears he had held back all night finally fall.

“I’m right here, sweetheart,” he choked out, his voice thick with emotion. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Emily managed a tiny, tired smile, the exact tilt of Sarah’s mouth when she was trying to be brave.

“Does that mean... you’re my dad now?”

Maxwell looked into her green eyes—his eyes, Sarah’s eyes—and felt the heavy, suffocating weight of the past seven years lift.
