Chapter 12 - FRAGMENTED MEMORIES

Sarah reached out a trembling hand, her fingers lightly brushing against Maxwell’s cheek as if testing whether he was real or a hallucination.

“Max?” she whispered, her voice rough from disuse. “Is the rain still falling outside the library?”

A sharp ache pierced Maxwell’s chest. She was trapped years in the past, back to the rainy afternoon they used to meet at Columbia before his family’s shadow tore them apart.

“No, Sarah. The storm is over,” Maxwell said, taking her cold hand and pressing it to his lips. “I’m here now. And I need to tell you something important. I met our little girl.”

At the mention of a child, a sudden, fierce flash of clarity ignited in Sarah’s eyes. The wandering, vacant look vanished, replaced by stark, crushing panic. She gripped Maxwell’s shoulders with surprising strength.

“Emily? Where is Emily? Did David take her?” she gasped, her breath coming in shallow, ragged bursts. “They said if I ever came back, they’d take her away from me! They said the Bennett name would poison her!”

“Shh, Sarah, look at me,” Maxwell soothed, holding her steady. “David can’t touch her anymore. We have her. She’s at Massachusetts General Hospital right now, and she’s fighting leukemia with everything she has. But she needs her mother. She needs us both.”

Sarah stared into his eyes, reading the absolute truth in his gaze. Slowly, the terror receded, leaving behind a profound, devastating relief. She leaned forward and buried her face in his neck, crying tears that had been frozen inside her for seven long years.
