Chapter 1 - The Frame-by-Frame DestructionThe blue light from the security monitor cast a harsh, ghostly glow across Mr. Hall’s tired face, but I didn't look away. I couldn't.

On the screen, time stamp 5:12 PM, the high-definition lens of Camera 4 captured every single detail of Megan’s calculated cruelty. There was no mistaking it as an "innocent mistake," nor could anyone brush it aside as a frantic parent's lapse in judgment.
Megan wasn't looking around frantically. She wasn't scanning the aisles for a lost child.
In the frame, Megan stood right inside the sliding glass doors. She had her cart loaded with Mom's gourmet groceries, her purse slung securely over her shoulder, and her phone gripped tightly in her hand. Then, she turned her head directly toward the patio cushion display where Lily was hiding, crouched in terror. Megan’s lips parted in what was unmistakably a smug, vindictive smirk. She raised her phone, snapped a quick photo—presumably the one she was laughing at when she dropped the keys into the ceramic bowl—and deliberately turned her back, walking out into the humid evening air without a single backward glance.
Officer Ruiz let out a low, heavy breath, the kind of professional exhale that signaled a shift from skepticism to cold, hard law enforcement. He reached out and tapped the screen with the blunt edge of a pen.
"Mr. Hall," Officer Ruiz said, his voice dropping an octave into official police register. "Can you isolate that frame, enhance the timestamp, and copy the raw footage directly to an encrypted drive?"
"Already doing it, Officer," Mr. Hall replied, his fingers flying across his keyboard with the practiced speed of a man who suddenly realized he was holding evidence in a felony child abandonment case. "And I'm pulling the audio logs and parking lot exterior cameras, too. Just to cover every angle."
I tightened my arms around Lily, burying her face further into the crook of my neck so she wouldn't have to watch the replay of her aunt abandoning her. Her little body was still trembling, warm tears soaking through the fabric of my cardigan.

"She took a picture of her," I whispered, the realization hitting my chest like a physical blow. "She knew exactly where she was. She left her there on purpose to punish me."
Officer Ruiz turned to me, his expression grim. "Ma'am, based on what I'm seeing here, this crosses the line from gross negligence straight into reckless endangerment of a minor. We have the video evidence, the store logs, and the victim's testimony. We're going back to that house."
