Chapter 3 - The Arrest and the EscalationOfficer Ruiz didn't hesitate. He stepped past my mother, pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical pouch, and grabbed Megan’s right wrist.

"Megan Vance, you are under arrest for the reckless endangerment of a minor and felony child abandonment," Officer Ruiz recited cleanly, his voice echoing off the brick facade of the house. "You have the right to remain silent..."

Megan let out a piercing scream of absolute disbelief as the metal cuffs clicked shut around her wrists. "Mom! Do something! Make them stop!"

Mom lunged forward, grabbing at Officer Ruiz’s sleeve. "You can't do this! Do you know who my husband was? Do you know who we are in this county?"

"Ma'am, if you interfere with a peace officer executing a lawful arrest, I will have to place you in cuffs, too," Officer Ruiz warned coldly.

Mom froze, her hand hovering in the air. For the first time in her life, her social standing, her country club memberships, and her sharp tongue meant absolutely nothing against the cold, unyielding machinery of the law.

As Megan was led down the walkway and placed into the back of the patrol car, she twisted her head around, glaring at me through the wire mesh and glass with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.

"I will destroy you for this," she hissed through the locked window. "You hear me? I will take everything from you!"

The patrol car pulled away, its taillights bleeding red into the dark street.

I stood on the porch with Lily still holding onto my neck, breathing heavily. Mom stood behind me in the doorway, trembling, her face drained of all color.

"Are you happy now?" Mom whispered bitterly, her voice shaking with suppressed rage. "You ruined your own sister's life over a child who wasn't even physically hurt."

I turned slowly, looking at the woman who had told me not to overreact while my five-year-old daughter sat alone in a dark grocery store aisle.

"Pack your bags, Mom," I said quietly.

She blinked, stunned. "What?"

"You heard me. You defended her, you lied for her, and you blamed me for my child being abandoned. You're not staying another night in this house."
