Chapter 5 - The Morning AftermathThe morning sun broke over the suburban rooftops with a blinding, indifferent glare, but inside the county courthouse, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

I sat on the wooden bench in the gallery, my posture rigid, wearing a sharp navy blazer that signaled I wasn't here to play the victim anymore. Next to me sat Marcus, who had arrived precisely on schedule, looking like an apex predator in a tailored charcoal suit.

Across the aisle sat a high-priced defense attorney whom Mom had frantically retained at 3:00 AM using her own personal savings. Beside the lawyer sat Megan, wearing an orange county jumpsuit, her hair unbrushed, and her eyes dark and hollow from a sleepless night behind bars.

When Megan caught sight of me sitting next to Marcus—her former brother-in-law whom she had always despised and mocked behind his back—her jaw dropped in sheer horror.

"What is he doing here?" Megan hissed across the aisle, her voice echoing in the quiet courtroom before the judge entered. "This is a family matter! He has no standing!"

Marcus didn't even dignify her with a glance. He simply adjusted his gold-plated fountain pen and whispered to me, "Watch and learn, Elena. Watch how fast a empire built on lies collapses when you pull the bottom card."

The bailiff's voice boomed through the room. "All rise for the Honorable Judge Patricia Sterling."

Judge Sterling took her seat, adjusted her glasses, and reviewed the case file on her desk. Her expression was like carved granite as she read through Officer Ruiz’s detailed incident report, the transcript of Mr. Hall’s interview, and the forensic breakdown of the security footage from Oakridge Market.

When she finally looked up, her gaze swept over the courtroom and landed squarely on Megan’s defense attorney.

"Counsel," Judge Sterling said, her voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel. "I have reviewed the preliminary evidence submitted by the state, including the high-definition security footage from Oakridge Market timestamped 5:12 PM yesterday. The defendant is captured on camera intentionally abandoning a five-year-old child in an isolated section of a commercial property, taking a photograph of the distressed minor, and exiting the premises."

The defense attorney swallowed hard, opening his mouth to speak, but Judge Sterling cut him off with a wave of her hand.

"Do not insult this court by calling this an 'innocent mistake' or a 'family prank,'" the judge continued, her voice hardening. "The state is moving for felony child endangerment and reckless endangerment with aggravating factors."

Megan let out a sharp, audible gasp, burying her face in her orange-sleeved hands as reality finally crashed down upon her.
