Chapter 4 - The Midnight Phone CallThe house was suffocatingly quiet after Mom packed her designer suitcases and stormed off to stay at a local motel, muttering about ungrateful daughters and family disgrace.

I sat at the kitchen island under the harsh overhead light. Lily was finally asleep upstairs in my bed, her breathing deep and even, though her small hand was still tightly gripping a corner of my spare pillowcase.

It was 10:30 PM.

The adrenaline that had sustained me through the store, the police confrontation, and Megan’s arrest was rapidly evaporating, leaving behind a hollow, burning fury. But I didn't break down. I didn't cry. I had a promise to keep—the phone call no one saw coming.

I picked up my phone, bypassed my call history, and dialed a number I hadn't used in four years.

It rang twice before a deep, gravelly voice answered.

"This is Marcus Vance."

Hearing my ex-husband’s voice sent a strange, cold shiver down my spine, but my resolve didn't waver. Marcus was a corporate defense attorney in Chicago—ruthless, brilliant, and fiercely protective of Lily, despite our bitter custody battle years ago that had ended with me holding primary physical care and him paying heavy monthly support while living out of state.

"Marcus," I said, keeping my voice steady. "It’s me."

There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. "Elena? It’s past ten o'clock. Is Lily okay? Did something happen?"

"Lily is sleeping upstairs right now, but something terrible happened tonight," I said, and without pausing, I laid it all out. I told him about the grocery store trip, Megan’s cruel prank, the security footage, Officer Ruiz, and the arrest.

For thirty seconds, there was absolute silence on the line. When Marcus spoke again, his voice wasn't warm, but it radiated a terrifying, focused intensity.

"Where is Megan right now?"

"County holding facility," I replied. "Bail hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning."

"Listen to me very carefully, Elena," Marcus said, the corporate lawyer inside him waking up with a vengeance. "Your sister didn't just commit a misdemeanor child endangerment charge. She committed a class-level felony depending on state sentencing guidelines for willful endangerment resulting in psychological trauma. And your mother enabled it."

"What are you planning, Marcus?"

"I'm chartering a private flight out of O'Hare tonight," he said calmly. "I'll be at your local precinct by 7:00 AM. And Elena? We aren't just going to let the state handle this. As Lily’s father, I am filing an immediate civil suit against Megan for intentional infliction of emotional distress, and I'm expanding it to include joint liability for your mother's complicity."

A cold smile touched the corners of my lips. "Good. Let's finish them."
