Chapter 8 - The Unraveling of the EstateWithin forty-eight hours of the asset freeze, the house of cards began to collapse in spectacular fashion.

Without access to her primary accounts, Mom discovered that her lavish lifestyle was entirely dependent on the very trust funds Megan had been pillaging and manipulating. The mortgage payments on the sprawling suburban estate bounced. The country club dues went unpaid. And within a week, the bank served notice of impending foreclosure proceedings.
Mom tried calling me twelve times a day, alternating between tearful apologies, furious demands, and pathetic pleas for financial assistance. I blocked her number on the third call.
Meanwhile, Megan’s high-priced defense attorney officially filed a motion to withdraw from the case, citing "irreconcilable differences and client deception" after discovering that Megan had lied about the nature of the security footage and her financial history.
Sitting in Marcus’s temporary office setup at my kitchen table, I watched the digital updates roll in on my laptop.
"Her public defender is going to have a field day with her plea negotiations," Marcus noted, taking a sip of black coffee. "Without her mother’s money to fund a prolonged trial, and with the ironclad video evidence and witness testimony, she’s looking at a minimum of three to five years behind bars with no parole eligibility."
I looked up from the screen, watching Lily through the glass door as she happily played hopscotch on the back patio, her pink sweater replaced by a bright yellow one, her smile wide and untroubled.
"And Mom?" I asked.

Marcus leaned back, crossing his legs. "Civil charges for accessory, financial fraud, and emotional distress are moving forward. She’s going to lose the house, Elena. Every single asset is going to be liquidated to satisfy the court-mandated trust restitution for Lily."
A strange sense of peace washed over me. The storm had been terrifying, destructive, and painful, but the air had finally cleared.
