Chapter 9 - The Trial's Final VerdictThe trial lasted exactly three days.

It wasn't because the legal teams rushed, but because there was simply nothing left to argue. When Mr. Hall played the high-definition security footage of Megan intentionally walking away from Lily, snapping a photo of her distress, and stepping out into the evening air for the jury to see in 4K resolution, the courtroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence.
Megan sat at the defense table, flanked by a weary public defender who spent most of the trial staring at his notepad with a look of profound embarrassment.
When it came time for my victim impact statement, I walked to the podium, looked directly at the jury, and then turned my gaze toward my sister.
"For five years, I raised my daughter to believe the world was a safe place, and that family was a fortress," I said, my voice steady, clear, and ringing with absolute power. "On that evening, my sister turned that fortress into a trap. She didn't lose my child. She hunted for a place to break her spirit, laughed about it while dropping my keys into a ceramic bowl, and expected everyone around her to protect her cruelty."
I paused, looking over at Mom, who sat in the back row of the gallery, completely isolated, ignored by every former friend and neighbor who had once bowed to her social status.
"Today, accountability isn't an overreaction," I concluded. "It is the only justice that matters."
The jury deliberated for a grand total of forty-two minutes.

The verdict was unanimous across all counts: Guilty on all charges of felony child endangerment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and reckless abandonment.
As Judge Sterling banged her gavel down with a sharp, final crack that echoed through the room, Megan buried her face in her hands and wept—not tears of remorse, but tears of pure, unadulterated shock that consequences had finally caught up to her.
