Chapter 11 - The Aftermath on Pier 4 The heavy scent of cordite and ozone lingered in the freezing air of the old railway depot as the federal marshals moved in to secure the perimeter. Nikolai Rostova and his remaining enforcers were zip-tied and led toward the waiting transport vans, their faces hidden in the harsh glare of the police cruisers' emergency lights.

Vanessa stood slumped against a rusted steel beam, her right wrist swollen and bruised where the kinetic round had shattered her grip, cursing violently at every officer who walked past her.
Adrian stood a few feet away, still holding Clara as if letting go would make the entire nightmare vanish. The adrenaline was slowly draining from his system, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion.
Detective Marcus Vance walked over, closing his notebook with a sharp snap. "Well, Mr. Vance, your instincts—or rather, your father-in-law's intelligence network—saved you a trip to the morgue tonight. We’ve been tracking Rostova’s shell corporation for six months. Your wife’s desperate prison breakout was the missing puzzle piece we needed to issue RICO indictments against the entire syndicate."
Adrian looked over at Arthur Sterling, who was standing by the open door of a heated SUV, leaning heavily on his silver-headed cane. The old tycoon didn't look triumphant; he looked grim, bearing the heavy burden of a father who had watched his daughter endure unimaginable heartbreak.
"You knew?" Adrian asked, his voice rough as he gently pulled back from Clara to face Arthur. "You knew they were setting a trap?"
"We intercepted the burner phone messages three days ago," Arthur replied smoothly, his piercing blue eyes locking onto Adrian's. "The question wasn't whether Rostova would try to eliminate you; the question was whether you had finally learned how to protect your family without letting your ego blind you first."

Adrian swallowed hard, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. He knew Arthur was right. If he had acted alone tonight out of foolish heroism, he would be dead, and Clara would be a widow once more.
"Thank you, Arthur," Adrian said quietly, his voice entirely devoid of pride. "For everything."
