Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips Vanessa scrambled backward, her high heels catching on the edge of the hallway runner, sending her sprawling against the antique umbrella stand. Copper walking sticks and heavy iron umbrellas crashed down around her, but she didn't care. She crab-walked away from Adrian as he loomed over her like an executioner.

"Adrian, don't you dare come near me!" Vanessa shrieked, clawing at the wall as she tried to stand. "Remember who you are! Remember what I hold over your head! If you touch me, if you call the police, I swear to God I will strip you of everything! The company, the bank accounts, the custody of Emma—I’ll take it all!"

Adrian stopped dead in his tracks. Not out of fear, but because of the sheer, venomous audacity dripping from her words. He looked down at the woman he had invited into his home, the woman he had trusted to raise his children after the tragic death of his first wife, and realized he had brought a venomous viper right to his hearth.

"You think you have leverage?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping an octave into a low, terrifying growl. "You tried to kill my child, Vanessa. No pre-nup, no lawyer, and no amount of blackmail in the world is going to save you from what's coming."

"Try me!" Vanessa screamed, scrambling to her feet and lunging toward the front door. She threw the heavy oak portal open, desperate to escape into the rainy night. "You'll never see a dime of my family's trust fund again! You'll be ruined!"

"Let her run," Olivia said coldly, stepping up beside her father with her arms crossed over her chest. "The security cameras outside captured her sprinting out the door with her passport case and diamond jewelry. The cops are already three minutes away. I called them the second I queued up the video on the TV."

As if on cue, the wail of approaching sirens cut through the rainy night air, rapidly growing louder until two police cruisers pulled up onto the gravel driveway, their red and blue emergency lights flashing frantically against the white columns of the porch.

Adrian didn't chase Vanessa. He didn't have to. He slowly turned his back on the open doorway and walked back into the living room, his boots feeling like they weighed a ton with every single step.

Clara was standing by the window holding baby Emma, who had finally quieted down, resting her tiny head against Clara’s shoulder. Clara’s back was turned to him. She was rocking the baby with rhythmic, mechanical precision, refusing to look back toward the center of the room where the wreckage of their family lay scattered across the floor.

Adrian stopped a few feet away, his throat tight, the burning weight of his terrible mistake pressing down on his chest like a boulder.

"Clara..." he choked out again, his voice breaking completely. "Please... let me look at your face."

Clara slowly turned around. The side of her face was already swelling, turning a deep, ugly shade of purple where his heavy hand had struck her just minutes ago. But it wasn't the physical mark that broke Adrian; it was the impenetrable wall in her eyes.

"Don't," Clara said softly, her voice devoid of anger, which was infinitely worse. "You made your choice, Adrian. When the moment of truth came, you didn't see me as your wife. You saw a monster. And you can't unsee that."

Before Adrian could find the words to beg, heavy footsteps echoed at the front door, and two police officers walked into the foyer, led by Olivia.
