Chapter 9 - The Final Chess Move Three months later.

The anniversary of the night that nearly destroyed the Vance family had arrived, bringing with it a biting winter chill that coated the Boston streets in a layer of glistening frost.
Adrian sat at his desk in the newly restructured corporate headquarters. Through hard work, intensive psychological counseling, and strict adherence to Arthur Sterling's oversight, he had successfully rebuilt the company's reputation. But professional success felt hollow. He lived alone in a modest downtown apartment, visiting his children only during scheduled, supervised weekends.
His phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It was an unknown number, displaying a local text message:
If you want to see your daughter safe, come to the old abandoned railway depot on Pier 4 alone within the hour. Do not call the police, or you will never see her alive again.
Adrian’s heart stopped. The blood rushed violently in his ears. He grabbed his coat, sprinting out of the office and diving into his car, hitting the accelerator before the door was even fully closed.
Thirty minutes later, the tires of his sedan screeched against the icy gravel of Pier 4. The massive, rusting steel framework of the old railway depot loomed like a haunted skeleton against the dark, freezing Atlantic ocean.
Adrian threw open the car door and bolted inside the cavernous warehouse. The interior was pitch black, illuminated only by the pale moonlight filtering through broken skylights overhead.
"Hello?!" Adrian shouted, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "I'm here! Where is she?!"
From the shadows near the loading dock, a figure stepped forward into a shaft of moonlight. It wasn't Vanessa. It was Nikolai Rostova, holding a heavy iron crowbar, flanked by two masked enforcers.
"Welcome, Mr. Vance," Nikolai sneered, clapping his hands slowly. "We've been expecting you."
"Where is my daughter?!" Adrian roared, lunging forward, but the two enforcers intercepted him instantly, slamming him hard against a concrete pillar and pinning his arms behind his back.
"Relax, your precious little Emma is safe at home with her nanny," Nikolai chuckled, walking up to Adrian and tapping the iron crowbar against his palm. "We didn't bring you here for the baby. We brought you here because you broke the rules of the underworld when you let your father-in-law liquidate our silent partnership shares."
Before Adrian could process the trap, a side door creaked open, and a figure stepped out from the darkness.
It was Vanessa. She had been released on a technicality engineered by Nikolai's legal team two days ago. She looked different—harder, her eyes hollow and burning with unadulterated madness.
"You ruined my life, Adrian," Vanessa hissed, walking slowly toward him until she stood just inches away. "You let that peasant Clara and her rich father kick me out like a stray dog. And now... you're going to pay for it."
May you like
She raised her hand—not to slap him, but holding a loaded Smith & Wesson revolver pointed directly at his chest.
"Say goodbye, Adrian," she whispered, her finger tightening on the trigger.
