Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the Cell While peace was slowly taking root in the sunlit carriage house, a very different reality was playing out behind the heavy steel doors of the county detention facility.

Vanessa paced back and forth across the narrow concrete floor of her holding cell like a caged animal. Her designer clothes had been replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit; her hair was unwashed, pulled back into a messy ponytail; and the manicured nails she was so proud of were chipped and broken.

The heavy iron door clanked open, and a guard stepped aside to let a visitor in.

It wasn't a defense attorney. It was a man in an expensive, sharply tailored Italian suit, carrying a sleek leather briefcase—Nikolai Rostova, a high-priced criminal defense lawyer notorious for representing the most ruthless underworld figures on the East Coast.

"Mrs. Vance," Nikolai said smoothly, stepping into the cell and taking a seat at the small metal table without being invited. "Or should I say... Vanessa Rossi?"

Vanessa stopped pacing, her eyes narrowing with sudden, desperate suspicion. "Who are you? My defense team dropped me yesterday after my husband's father cut off my funds. I can't afford your retainer."

Nikolai smiled—a thin, humorless expression that didn't reach his cold, dark eyes. "You assume I'm here representing you, Vanessa. I am not. I represent an interested party who has a very specific score to settle with the man who just stripped you of your empire: Adrian Vance."

Vanessa crossed her arms, a bitter, hysterical laugh escaping her throat. "Adrian? That spineless fool couldn't organize a grocery trip, let alone hire a high-priced fixer like you!"

"Adrian didn't hire me," Nikolai corrected softly, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the steel table. "A mutual acquaintance of ours—someone who lost millions when your little stunt at the mansion tanked the corporate merger we were planning—sent me here with a proposition."

Vanessa's breath hitched. "What... what kind of proposition?"

Nikolai slid a single, crisp photograph across the table. It was a high-resolution shot of little Emma playing in the sunlight on the porch of Clara's new carriage house, flanked by Olivia and Leo.

"Your husband thinks he won," Nikolai whispered, his voice dropping to a chilling, conspiratorial murmur. "He thinks his father-in-law's money saved his company and his family. But the board isn't cleared yet, Vanessa. If you want your freedom, your wealth, and your ultimate revenge on the man who threw you in this cage... you're going to help us finish what you started on the stairs."
