Chapter 11 - The Ghost in the Ledger

The private terminal at Teterboro Airport hummed with the quiet, suffocating luxury of private aviation at 3:00 AM.
Selena stepped down the metal staircase of the Moretti Gulfstream, her heels clicking crisply against the tarmac. The cold autumn wind tore at the hem of her cashmere coat, but she didn't flinch. Behind her, Lucian descended with the unhurried grace of a predator who owned the airspace overhead as well as the concrete below.
"The Swiss accounts have been verified," Selena said, her voice cutting cleanly through the jet's dying engine whine. She handed a heavy leather portfolio to Rico, who materialized beside the tarmac like a shadow detached from the fuselage. "Every transaction from the Zurich branch has been cross-referenced with the Federal Reserve's overnight liquidity reports. If the Swiss National Bank tries to obscure the origin of the capital transfer, the automated red flag trips by 6:00 AM."
Lucian stopped beside her, his dark eyes tracing the sharp profile of her face under the harsh sodium lights of the runway. "You haven't slept in thirty-six hours, Selena."
"Sleep is a luxury for people who haven't yet locked down a hostile takeover of three European shipping conglomerates," she retorted smoothly, though a ghost of a smile touched the corner of her lips. She turned to face him, the vast expanse of the runway stretching behind them. "Did you really think I'd let the board slip that loophole past us during the Frankfurt negotiations?"
"I never doubted your mathematics," Lucian murmured, stepping close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his chest through the heavy wool of his suit. "I only wondered how long it would take you to realize that you're no longer playing defense."

She didn't answer right away. She looked out toward the distant skyline of Manhattan, glittering like a broken crown against the ink-black sky. Six months ago, she had been standing in the Meridian Grand Hotel with a notepad in her clutch, terrified of a man who thought possession was power. Now, the financial world danced to a rhythm she and Lucian set together.
"Defense is for people who are waiting to be attacked," Selena said quietly, her eyes locking onto his with an intensity that made the surrounding night air feel charged. "We don't wait."
