Chapter 15 - The Uninvited GuestThe penthouse was dead silent when they returned at 2:00 AM, save for the rhythmic patter of rain against the glass walls.

Selena kicked off her heels, letting them drop onto the hardwood floor with a sharp clatter, and walked toward the kitchen island to pour a glass of water. As she reached for the crystal decanter, the hairs on the back of her neck stood up.
A shadow detached itself from the dark recess of the private study corridor.
"You're working late, Selena," a voice murmured—smooth, cultured, and violently out of place.
Selena froze. She didn't drop the glass. She didn't turn around too quickly. She recognized the cadence instantly, even though she hadn't heard it in months, even though she had watched federal marshals drag its owner away in handcuffs on the evening news.
Damen Cross stepped into the amber light of the kitchen.
He looked different. The expensive charcoal suits were gone, replaced by a cheap, ill-fitting tweed jacket. His hair was uncombed, his skin sallow, and his eyes—once filled with the arrogant condescension of a rising corporate star—were now hollow, bloodshot, and wild with a desperate, animalistic panic.
"How did you get in here?" Selena asked, her voice dropping into an icy, level register that betrayed zero panic.
"Your security system is state-of-the-art," Damen laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "Except when the man who designed the backend architecture for Moretti Holdings three years ago left a master administrative backdoor in the legacy code." He took a step closer, his hand sliding into the pocket of his tweed jacket. "You forgot about the legacy code, didn't you, Selena? You thought you wiped me clean."
From the shadows of the hallway entrance, Lucian stepped into the light. He didn't rush. He didn't shout. He moved with the terrifying, silent certainty of an apex predator watching a wounded rat wander into a cage.
"He didn't forget the code, Cross," Lucian said, his voice dangerously low. "She left it open."
Damen blinked, spinning around to face Lucian. "What?"
"We knew you made bail two days ago through an anonymous shell company in the Bahamas," Selena said, turning around slowly to face her ex-fiancé, her expression as cold and flat as a slab of granite. "We knew you were hiding out in a motel in Queens. And we knew you were stupid enough to try and crawl back here to salvage whatever bruised ego you had left."

Damen’s face contorted with rage. His hand whipped out of his jacket pocket, clutching a heavy, matte-black Walther PPK pistol. He pointed it directly at Selena’s chest, his hands shaking so violently the barrel rattled like a loose pipe.
"Shut up!" Damen screamed, spittle flying from his lips. "You ruined my life! You were nothing! You were a secretary who fetched my coffee and typed my memos! Without me, you're just a stray dog starving in an empty apartment!"
