Chapter 12 - The Price of a SignatureThe oak-paneled boardroom of Moretti-Hart Global smelled of aged leather, imported espresso, and unadulterated fear.

Fourteen executive directors sat in absolute silence around the massive black marble table. They were the remnants of the old guard—men who had survived decades of corporate warfare by stepping over corpses and burying scandals in offshore accounts. Today, however, they looked less like masters of the universe and more like defendants awaiting a verdict.
At the head of the table sat Arthur Pendelton’s replacement, a nervous-looking British financier named Julian Vance, whose forehead glistened with a fine sheen of sweat despite the aggressive air conditioning.
"The... the terms of the London acquisition are highly unusual, Ms. Hart," Vance stammered, sliding a thick document across the marble. "Demanding a personal equity guarantee from every board member's private holdings? That’s unprecedented."
Selena didn't look down at the document. She remained standing at the opposite end of the table, her hands resting flat on the cool surface, her posture rigid and absolute in her charcoal suit.
"Unprecedented is a polite word for incompetent, Mr. Vance," Selena said, her voice dropping into that cool, administrative register that always preceded a lethal strike. "Your division lost forty-two million dollars in unsecured currency swaps last quarter because your compliance officer was too busy skimming off the top to notice a basic volatility shift in the Eurozone."
Vance’s face turned the color of curdled milk. "That was an isolated incident—"
"Page twelve, appendix B," Selena interrupted, her eyes narrowing as she stepped forward. "Complete with the wire logs, the Swiss intermediary routing codes, and the home address of the offshore shell company registered in your wife's maiden name."
The silence in the room became absolute. One of the older directors near the back quietly closed his notepad, his hands trembling so violently he dropped his gold-plated fountain pen.
"You have ten minutes to sign the restructuring agreement, Mr. Vance," Selena said, her voice like shards of ice sliding across glass. "You can sign it as a cooperating executive retaining his pension, or you can sign it from a federal holding cell while the Department of Justice asset-strips your estate down to your winter coats. Choose wisely."
May you like
Vance stared at her for three agonizing seconds, his chest heaving as the reality of his total annihilation washed over him. With a trembling hand, he grabbed the pen, dragged it across the signature line, and slumped back into his leather chair as if all the bones had been pulled from his body.
Selena picked up the document, checked the signature with clinical precision, and turned on her heel without offering a single word of parting comfort.
