Chapter 8 - The Ghost from the PastThe rain was lashing against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse when the private security chime rang at 2:14 AM.

Lucian didn't even flinch. He sat at his mahogany desk, reviewing a series of encrypted acquisition files on his monitor, while Selena poured herself a fresh cup of espresso.
"Rico is downstairs," Lucian said, his voice flat. "He brought a visitor."
"Damen?" Selena asked, her voice devoid of emotion, like a scientist reading a lab report on an obsolete specimen.
"Worse," Lucian replied, standing up. "Isabelle Fontaine."
Ten minutes later, the elevator doors slid open. Isabelle looked nothing like the radiant, untouchable twenty-six-year-old from the Ashford Charity Gala. Her mascara was smeared, her designer trench coat soaked through, and her hands wrapped tightly around a leather handbag as if it were a life raft.
She took one look at Selena standing by the kitchen island in her tailored pantsuit, holding a steaming mug of espresso, and stopped dead in her tracks.
"You," Isabelle whispered, her voice cracking. "You did this. You and... and him."
"I didn't do anything, Isabelle," Selena said smoothly, taking a slow sip of her coffee. "Damen spent six years building a house of cards on other people's debt and blaming everyone else when the wind blew. I merely opened the window."
"He’s gone," Isabelle sobbed, her composure completely shattering. "The police took him an hour ago from his apartment. They say he’s facing twenty years for corporate fraud and money laundering. My family... my father is cutting me off because my name was on the joint credit accounts."
"A harsh lesson in portfolio diversification," Selena remarked, her voice dangerously calm. "Next time, choose a partner whose assets aren't backed by illegal shell companies and stolen ledgers."
Isabelle stared at her with a mix of hatred and sheer, unadulterated terror. She realized, in that moment, that the woman standing before her wasn't the quiet, obedient secretary Damen had mocked over breakfast for half a decade. She was the woman who had engineered his downfall with a stroke of a keyboard.
"You're a monster," Isabelle spat out.
"No," Lucian stepped out from the shadow of the hallway, towering over the terrified young woman with a dark, terrifying grace. "She’s a survivor. And you are trespassing."

He gestured to Rico, who materialized silently from the elevators like a shadow.
"Escort Ms. Fontaine out," Lucian commanded quietly. "And make sure she understands that if she ever comes within five miles of this building again, her father’s remaining shipping ports will be liquidated by sunrise."
