Chapter 14 - The Anatomy of a TrapBack inside the bulletproof Maybach speeding through the damp, neon-lit streets of Manhattan, the silence was heavy, charged with the residual electricity of a high-stakes standoff.

Lucian turned his head from the window, his dark eyes glinting in the dashboard's dim illumination. "You pushed Rostov hard tonight. He’s not Damen Cross. He doesn't panic when you freeze an account; he has private security teams that make federal agents look like mall cops."

"Rostov is overleveraged," Selena said calmly, unpinning a diamond-accented brooch from her emerald gown and tossing it onto the leather seat beside her. "His natural gas pipeline in the Balkans is hemorrhaging cash due to maintenance delays, and his political backers in Moscow are looking for a scapegoat. If we corner him on the Cyprus transfers, he won't shoot us—he’ll cut a deal to survive."

"And if you miscalculated?" Lucian asked, a dangerous, razor-thin smile touching his lips. "If Rostov decides a preemptive strike is cheaper than a settlement?"

Selena turned her head slowly, meeting his gaze with absolute, unyielding calm. She reached out, her fingers resting lightly against the lapel of his jacket, trailing upward until her palm cupped the warm skin of his jawline—the exact same spot where the faint, jagged white scar marked his past.

"Then we burn his empire down beside him," she whispered, her voice steady and devoid of fear. "You taught me that an asset is just a person who hasn't realized they're holding a weapon yet, Lucian. I'm done holding weapons for other people. I aim them myself."

Lucian caught her wrist, not with the tight, suffocating precision of Damen Cross, but with a fierce, possessive warmth that anchored her entirely. He pulled her closer until the space between them vanished, sealing her lips in a kiss that tasted like smoke, scotch, and absolute victory.
