Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a GhostThe bulletproof Maybach cut through the rain-slicked concrete of downtown Manhattan like a scalpel through skin. Inside, the cabin was insulated from the city’s roar, wrapped in soft leather and the faint, expensive scent of sandalwood and gun oil.

Selena stared out the tinted window, watching the neon signs smear into long, bleeding ribbons of red and green. Her reflection stared back at her—the navy dress, the sharp sweep of her eyeliner, the exact same woman who had walked into the Meridian Grand Hotel at 8:50 PM. And yet, the air around her felt different. Thicker. Charged with a current she couldn't ground.

"You're very quiet," Lucian said from the opposite corner of the spacious back seat. He hadn't touched her since they left the hotel. His hands rested loosely on his thighs, his dark suit jacket unbuttoned, revealing the crisp line of a white shirt unfastened at the collar.

"I’m calculating the probability that you’re a fictional character invented by Gerald to test my crisis management skills," Selena replied without turning her head.

A low, rich rumble of laughter escaped him. "Gerald is a cautious man. He rents risk; he doesn't manufacture it. He knows who I am because three years ago, I bought the debt on his family’s shipping ports in Genoa and let him pay it back at two percent interest."

"Why?"

"Because he’s competent. And competence in a world full of posturing amateurs is a rare commodity worth protecting." Lucian shifted slightly, his gaze heavy and analytical as it traced the profile of her face. "Just like you."

Selena finally turned to look at him, her eyes narrowing. "Don't flatter me, Mr. Moretti. I’m an executive secretary. I manage schedules, vet contracts, and make sure my boss doesn't accidentally commit federal tax fraud before noon. I am not an asset."

"An asset is just a person who hasn't realized they're holding a weapon yet," Lucian countered smoothly, leaning forward. The space between them suddenly felt dangerously small. "Damen Cross is a junior partner at Vanguard Capital. He thinks he’s a shark because he swallows minnows in commercial real estate. But three weeks ago, he signed a collateralized debt obligation that was underwritten by shell companies tied directly to my firm."

Selena’s breath hitched. "Vanguard doesn't do business with Moretti Holdings. The compliance department would flag it instantly."

"Compliance departments can be managed when the man signing the approval is drowning in six million dollars of private gambling debts accumulated at tables in Macau," Lucian said softly, a ghost of a smile touching the corner of his mouth. "Damen thought he was being clever. He thought he could use Isabelle Fontaine’s family money to bail himself out. What he didn't know is that Isabelle’s father is liquidating his assets to buy out Cross’s equity stake—leaving Damen with zero shares, zero leverage, and a very public bankruptcy by the end of the fiscal year."

The silence in the car became absolute, broken only by the rhythmic swish of the windshield wipers.

Selena stared at him, the cold clarity from earlier returning, multiplied tenfold. All those months of feeling small, of believing his parting words—You'll fall apart without me—dissolved into dust. He hadn't left her because she was inadequate. He had left her because he was sinking, and he couldn't afford to have a witness who noticed how fast the water was rising.

"You knew," Selena whispered, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "You didn't just happen to be at the bar tonight. You were waiting for him to break."

"I was waiting for you to realize you didn't need to carry his schedule anymore," Lucian corrected, his dark eyes locking onto hers with terrifying intensity. "Now. We have a choice, Selena. We can drop you off at your apartment, where you can make your four nights of cereal and pretend tonight never happened. Or..."

He reached out, his long, scarred fingers gently brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. The heat of his touch lingered on her skin long after his hand withdrew.

May you like

"Or?" she asked, her voice barely a breath.

"Or you can help me collect what Damen owes."
