The accompanying photograph showed Lucian Moretti standing beside a woman in a razor-sharp charcoal suit, her dark hair immaculate, her gaze fixed straight ahead with the cold, unblinking focus of an empress surveying her domain.

In a sterile holding cell downtown, Damen Cross stared at the newspaper clipping taped to the cinderblock wall. His hands shook as he traced the photograph of Selena’s face—the woman he had dismissed as a secretary, the woman who had walked away without a backward glance, now owning half the financial district alongside one of the most feared men in the underworld.

He remembered his parting words, whispered with such absolute arrogance in the quiet of their sterile apartment: You'll fall apart without me. You were nothing before me and you'll be nothing after.

He let out a hollow, pathetic laugh that echoed off the concrete walls, finally realizing the horrifying truth too late:

She hadn't fallen apart.

She had built an empire out of the ashes of his ruin, and she hadn't even bothered to look back.
